Hey everyone
I'm Malcolm. I'm 22 and I joined mostly because searching for a career has been more confusing than helpful
I've tried a couple career paths; becoming a police officer, didn't work out because i have a bad knee and i found out i wouldn't be able to pass the physical fitness tests... Becoming an HVAC Tech, went to school, got my apprenticeship license, got hired and worked for a whole 1.75 months then got laid off due to lack of work (personally i think i was cheated out of it than anything), even trying to get a job with programs FOR apprenticeship has been useless... Fact being everyone wants experience but they don't want to take the time to give someone that experience.
Even my knowledge of vehicles has come up with nothing. Most Established businesses want proof that you know what you're doing by the way of a college degree (which at $40k for a worthwhile school and even with my parent's help would never be able to afford), and most people that want someone to work on their car want the same proof. Quite frankly I'd trust a backyard mechanic that's been working on cars all their life than some of the shops I've taken a vehicle to (due to lack of equipment), especially when it comes to quality... maybe that's just me?
AND even my strange and self taught knowledge of weapons (mostly guns) hasn't helped other than to teach a few people looking to buy a new rifle or pistol about what might be best for what they're using it for...
So now with me being broke from the fact that I had to buy my own tools (around $1000 worth and I don't even have all the ones i would need) for the HVAC job and a two or three wants of my own (due to my stupidity of believing i had a stable job) I'm stuck with a little less than $100, a pick-up that I'm borrowing from my parents, and no job...
I've always been interested in the trucking industry and have always kept it in the back of my mind to try it out. I've always loved driving and I even raced a few tuner cars. So I'm just thinking that maybe the trucking industry is where I should be...
Hey y'all

Well, the bad knee could cause you problems depending on the physical that you will be put through. How would your knee hold up to climbing in and out of a rig, onto the cat walk, into and out of the trailer, and on the truck to your your pre-trip or post-trip inspection? Another thing to keep in mind with the knee is that the pedals are a lot harder on the legs than the ones in a car.
If your knee would be able to handle those things, then trucking just may be right up your alley! -
Welcome, whatever you choose career wise, do your homework..it'll save you time and money and probably some more grief. :smt001

Oh my knee is fine on lifting/climbing/pushing and whatever... It's mostly running and walking long distances that it gives me problems. I'm fine wearing an athletic brace if it gives me problems otherwise. I've never had problems with my knee while driving, even when i raced tuner cars, with the fast pace extremely repetitive movement (several thousand times a race, depending on the track) of the pedals probably puts more strain on my knees than a truck's would.
I usually do my homework before jumping into something like this... I did my homework with the HVAC trade and I still got the short end of the deal. I know experience is everything, but I'm also a quick learner, and while at my HVAC job, I was never really given the chance to show what I already could do or knew. My trainer started out being pretty cool, but then turned out to be full of hisself and never really taught me nothing. After him i was thrown around wherever i could help. See why i feel cheated?
I've kind of been looking at the trucking industry since high school, so I've had a good bit more homework done on it. I understand what I need to go through and the way of life as a truck driver. Right now I ain't got a family of my own, don't even got a home of my own, can't afford a whole lot, and I'm kind of stuck where I am at the moment, so this kind of career wouldn't put a whole lot more stress on my life than i already have...
