And that is like it should be. Everyone makes mistakes. A person who is doing a good job and makes a mistake may get "dinged" for it, but it should not be a "career ending" thing. Somebody who makes a "career ending" screw up does not belong in the job and it should NOT be covered up.
Or change it to cover the department's back side to avoid a law suit.

Even when I had a tape or DVD, I could not access the thing. A supervisor was the only one who had the key. You can record over it, it could not be tampered with. -
I think them being tamper resistant is a good thing for the LEO and for the person pulled over.
This way it will hold up in court, without all the questions and arguments.
If a LEO is doing his/ her job it is a blessing. If not it is a noose.
Thank you for info on how the audio works though. This was not something that I knew, and I had wondered for a while. Just never thought to ask.
The download you are talking about is what they are asking for on the EOBR's that are proposed in that new law.
They want them to download when passing a scale. So that if you are clean it will be a quick process. If you are over hours, they will know in the scale and be able to pull the offenders in on a regular basis.
I still have to go with OOIDA on them not really being a safety tool. But I do believe they are a very good compliance and dispatching tool. -
I had a typo, You can NOT record over it, the tapes or DVD are a one time use. That's what I get when I'm half asleep and posting.
The Challenger and Big Don Thank this. -
Well DB it looks like your out of hours........Pull over there and I get off in 8 hours and you better still be there.......
truckerdave1970 Thanks this. -
i'll gladly take my 34 hour. -
I don't know about the DVD systems, but the older VHS systems can be recorded over.We used plain ol VHS tapes.Had a big stack and would use one until it was empty or until we needed it for evidence, then put in another tape.i think I had 30 tapes.i would try to keep the tapes for at least a couple of months before i would reinsert them for use.still got a few old tapes layin around......just don't have a VCR anymore to watch em!lol

Ours have the tab removed after we used them. That tab, if I remeber correctly, was on the back side on the left side. If the tab is present, you can tape over, if you pull it off you can not. They kept our tapes for 10 years. I guess with lawsuits and appeals was the reason. Now as far as I know they are forever.
-
However, the hole where the tab has been removed can be covered with tape. Then the cassette can be taped over. At least that has been my experience with the VHS cassettes.

Video tapes aren't forever... the magnetic domains on the media will degrade or reorient themselves over time. Leads to fuzzy video, lots of noise, and eventually the tapes won't read at all.
