I think the place y'all are referring to was the Pro-Am, the old Texaco. Some of us used to gather there when we stayed in the Panhandle for a few days hauling fats. Some of the feedlot guys would want to clean up at night and meet us up there and take us to the bars. Nothing gets much rowdier than a bunch of feedlot cowboys who only get one day off every month.
Another good mom-and-pop place that was a regular stop for me was Merkel, I-20 at the 270 in Texas. And the 103 in Calhoun, LA - the one on the north side. Used to hook up with a lot of friends at those places.
Who else is old enough to remember that THE stop at the 599 on I-20 in Texas wasn't the National on the eastbound side, but the one on "the hill" on the North side of the interstate - Gene's Supper club. Lots of the hard-runners (what they call outlaws nowadays) used to hang out there. So I've heard. LOL
Good memories in this thread.

For some reason every truck I ever drove could not pass the "599" w/o going up the hill.
I could call home from Gene's and tell my wife I was # the 599 and she knew I would be home in exactly 8 hrs.
Do you remember Buddy Milsteads@ the 101 in Calhoun,La.? Red Beans, rice, sausage and all the sweet tea you could drink for $3.05 -
Mitten's Truckstop I70 and U.S. 40. The doors didn't have any locks cause the place never closed! Modern and run-of-the-mill now...
-
Mitten's went downhill real fast after TA took over, both the shop and the restarunt.

Stan's on I65 exit 46 Tennessee, They still have the round table for drivers only. Closet to the kitchen. Still have salted, sugar cured, or smoked ham. Some of it aged for years. Cornbread and pinto beans, turnip greens are almost always available. I don't think they have fuel pumps anymore but they do have gas. Oh Yeah, the waitresses are sharp and always has a smaile.

Chicopee Mass, AM Pride truckstop also has wicked clean showers.

I know it was mentioned, but Johnsons Corner, Loveland, Colo., yeah they've done some updating, but they haven't forgotten that truckers are their bread/butter. Large truck parking lot, good food, good prices, and the 4-wheelers get a much smaller lot.
Also, Gay Johnsons, I-70 Debeque Canyon Colo.
Lamar Travel Plaza, Lamar Colo.
Tomahawk Truck Stop, I-76 & Hwy 2, Brighton, Colo.
Tomahawk Truck Stop, Watkins, Colo.
Montrose Truck Stop, Montrose, Colo.
Gunsmoke Truck Stop, Johnson Village/Buena Vista, Colo. -
Big deal.
All of T/A's food is prepared the very same way!

The 18 Wheeler on hwy 6 in Taylor MO and The State Line in Neeleyville MO (which was mentioned in this thread a couple years ago) are both very good food choices and have the driver only seating areas.
