From my point of view they do. In my current position, I report to my yard at
5:00 am (when I was a G.M. for Bob Evans it was the same) you get used to a early schedule after awhile. I only work with one other driver. All of our
business with the company in Warren Michigan is done by phone or Nextel.
We only see "bosses" once every three or four months.
    Positives:
You are responsible for only you! You don't have to try to motivate, counsel, etc.. in my case at some points in my food career, up to 180 employees.
You will see this at stops, managers arguing with employees about not shaving, lates, tardies, blah, blah, blah.
If you manage a very busy kitchen or restaurant, you know it is very physical, on your feet 10-12 hours a day, the heat of the kitchen etc...
Physical is about the same, more heavy lifting. You may put away your delivery when Sysco brings it in and you know that is work. On a truck
you have your finger prints on every single item in that truck. I run between 386 pieces to 451.

On a truck, you start early and running 10-11 stops I can finish my day by 5:00 or 6:00 pm after paperwork. In a restaurant you may have to work late, some times very late hours 10:00-11:00 pm sometimes. If you have kids you won't see them that much. I missed both of my kids growing up because as a G.M. with Bob Evans I worked all the time. You can at least see your family in the evening for awhile.
If I were you, I would follow what your "heart" tells you to do. Many local companies have a hard time finding guys anymore that want to do the hard work. I don't usually do this but since you may be curious about local financial, in MY case I bring home around $980.00 per week. I was making that every two weeks at my last food service job. But again, my whole body aches but the money is very good. You need to investigate and make a choice that is good for you and your family.
    Happy Easter!

The general public drives just as retarded as you think they are in the restaurant.

As for making a change, I wouldn't do it, but thats just me. I wish I never would have gotten into trucking. But on the other hand I have met some great people that I WOULD NOT have met had I not been trucking.

Sorry if this is repetitive as I didn't read beyond the first page of replies!!

Go to a local or distant Truck Stop and:
    1) Take a Shower.
    2) Enter the (if) available restaurant and order a meal whilst enjoying the banter of the customers.
    3) Stick around till dark and observe the Hookers and other Scum that frequent Truck Stops.
    4) Listen to the many "horror" stories of the misguided and other seemingly unfortunate "Humans" strolling the parking lot(s) looking for a helping hand. The ones that claim they were "left behind by their friends", "need to get some gas to get home", "want to polish yer rims for a few bucks", "wanna use yer C. B. for something", among other repetitive "lines" of trying to garner YOUR money away from YOU.
    5) Notice as well the amount of trash everywhere where trucks park and the smell of containers rotting in the parking lot.

Do these things BEFORE wanting to "become a Truck driver" and maybe you'll venture into another field of interest.

These are a few of the MANY things available to WE THE TRUCKERS!!

Well I love being a truck driver its something Ive wanted to do since I was a little boy.But as my fellow truckers say its not easy long hour, not a lot of home time, working holidays etc.Like it was said before you may have to do a year otr before you are able to find a local job,and you may not make $50.000 at that local job.You have alot time invested into your job right now.Im not trying to talk you out of becomeing a truck driver, but what if you dont like being a trucker either? best of luck on what ever you and your family decide.
