Well I'm not quite there yet. I just signed up to get my CDL at NETTS in Mass. I'm pretty excited about my next adventure in life as a Truck Driver. :biggrin_25514: Im posting here because Ive been doing research for months. I was just wondering one particular thing I cant really get a straight answer for. Is there actually a concern for hi-jackers? Ive heard back and forth answers quite honestly I think its all scare tactics. I'm sure a bad area is a bad area but Truckers help each other out right? Reguardless I have a firearm but I just found this forum so I'm curious.

Also as far as companies go and whats a fair wage what should I been looking for? Im not expecting a silver spoon my first year. I also don't want to be ripped off at the first job offer my school gives me.

I'm 22 years old with a clean driving record. I have some tattoos I'm not covered or anything. I have my ears gauged and a lip ring. I don't look like an ### or a "rebel" or anything like that. I'm clean cut intelligent. I dropped out of Med school because I WANT to drive its in my familys blood. :biggrin_2559: I do understand some companies will judge a book by its cover. Should i take them out for my interviews? I really don't care if I can't have them honestly. I just prefer to have at least my gauges.

    thanks a lot
I look forward to updating all of you on my progress

    -Jonny

I cant take med school I don't like the vibe of it or the "professionalism" that doctors pretend they have.

I might just possibly shove a spoon in my face for some epic social enlightenment *notarps4me

don't worry about being hijacked.......if it happens, it happens......

worry more about finding a parking space after 4 PM for the night when you are driving east of the Mississippi River.

you got bigger problems, going to NETTTS........

It does happen from time to time. You just need to be aware of your surroundings and pay attention. Also try not to get yourself in those situations. Do not let other drivers know what you are hauling and where you are going. When you do get those "high risk" loads pay attention to vehicles that maybe following you or suspicious people. It is always a good idea to keep your doors locked at all times. I pulled into a rest stop and before I pulled my brakes I had someone jump onto my passenger door step and try to get into the truck. The door was locked and my wife was asleep in the back. To avoid conflict I just threw it in gear and pulled out and he jumped off. I called the police when I got down the road a little ways and got on the CB with the other drivers at the rest stop. I did have a friend of mine get jacked in LA! Luckily he did not get hurt but they never recovered his truck or his personal belongings. There was also a lady that drove for Central when we were there. She had went into the Pilot in PA to take a shower and when she came out her truck along with her little dog were gone! They did find the tractor abandoned in the woods later on that day and the dog was inside. Scared but ok. She also had a screaming meanie alarm clock and when they found the truck and dog the alarm had been going off the whole time! Poor dog. Probably went deaf! Anyway, stay alert at all times. Before jumping out of your truck take a minute to survey they parking lot. Usually other drivers keep an eye out for each other and this makes it a little more difficult for stuff to happen in well lit busy truck stops. You will learn where to stop and where not to spend time at. Most truck stops in CA are a little more high risk. As is Chicago, Miami, Pennsylvania, and Gary, IN! Memphis is also a hot spot. When in doubt don't get out! There are some things you can do to help deter theft also. "Team Operation" stickers are good to have along with "bad dog" stickers. Some drivers hang handcuffs in the windshield or other law enforcement memorabilia. This makes the bad guys think they are x-law enforcement. A dog is great to have. A snake is a good deterrent! (not that you would want one in your truck!) A gun is good to have but kind of is a "gray" issue in the truck industry. Some ladies carry stun guns. Another "gray" issue. Another thing I have mentioned in past threads is to hook bungy cords from your doors to your airhorn. If someone opens the door your horn will go off. There are also truck alarms you can have installed.

It does happen but, not nearly as often as some people make it sound. I wouldn't worry about it, just keep a lock on your trailer Empty OR Loaded, and Keep your doors locked.

As far as the piercings go, if your planning on OTR (Over The Road) you don't need to worry about "Interviews" for quite sometime. Most if not all the companies that hire new OTR drivers, just have you fill out and App. Online or mail/fax them a paper one and then they send you a Bus Ticket to orientation....They don't see you until your already there. But if your looking for a local job, theres a small chance that it might be a problem, again not very likely.

As far a pay goes expect .25-.32 CPM (Cents per Mile) the lowest you'll see offered is .25cpm, and the most you might see as a new driver is .40cpm. Expect to make $25,000-$40,000 your first year (DO YOUR RESEARCH, LISTEN TO WHAT YOU READ ON HERE)

There are TONS of people that come on here and read about CR England and Werner and then go work for them anyway, and then come back crying about how bad it is, or there $100/paychecks, or how they can't get another job because of something that happened at said Crappy company they chose to work for.

I also see that your from NH, that will make getting a job a little harder. Start calling companies see who will hire from there.

    Good Luck!

Hmmm excellent. As far at OTR goes I would like to do so but I rather keep my options open. Hard to find a job in nh? I figured I have mass and nh to find jobs I figured that's a good open window. After looking online it seems there's a lot of offers but not for noobies. NETTS "says" they will find me a job. After speaking to some friends it looks like they'd put me in swift or jb hunt. Which as I read around the forum don't have many issues.

    Thanks for the advice

    Geeze Louise!
    Finish the med school!
There are more jobs in the medical field than you can shake a stick at and they make better than what you're ever going to make as a trucker! Not to mention even with another recession, depression or whatever there will always be a medical job! At least finish school work it a bit then decide if this cesspool called trucking is for you!

Then there is the deal of where you live! Not a good area for driving jobs or even getting home! You just might think of moving south and west a bit! Not so much with a job in the medical field! I'm looking at a Phlebotomy class so I can get back to work! It wont pay what I used to make but it's a job and I'll move over to the cancer side in chemo (oncology) as I've been on the receiving end there!

As for the "Looks" drop the stupid ear stretchers! They will draw more attention than you'll want. All ear stretchers say about a man or woman that wears them is "Look at me I'm an Idiot" and yes that's what most ppl think of them! Along with lip rings in men! Catch one of them on something while you're working around the truck and you're going to look like the the drug dealer in "PayBack" when Mel ripped the ring out of his face. All these silly things are good for is impressing those not worth impressing. With stretchers and a lip ring how do you figure you're "clean cut" when most trucking companies won't get that impression when you sit down with them? And how the heck are you going to "hide" a big arsed hole in your ear? Band aids? What is it with men that think stretchers are "kewel"?? Don't forget to ask about having them before you even get on the bus to go to orientation! Like a lot of restaurants and other companies they might be against company policy and if you "hide" that you have them then some customer calls on you when you walk in looking like a circus freak you just might be paying for a bus ticket home or sitting on the curb at a truck stop in BFE waiting on a ride! Loose the childish crapola, grow up and that problem will take care of it's self. And yes, stretchers in a man and lip rings are signs that someone has a problem with becoming a man and can't get rid of childish things. I have yet to be impressed or intimidated by any man with face piercings other than an ear, or tats above the collar or stretchers. And that includes tounges in both sexes!

Silver Spoon? ROFLMAO! Not unless you're buying all of your equipment and hauling your own product! There are no silver spoons out here or ever has been!

Hijacking? Not so much if you keep your eyes open, turn off the ear buds and think smart and watch for followers.
