I'm not sure about previous background but I do know. You can check the status of their DOT number and if they have valid insurance. It will give you some history.
I posted some where in a thread, about 8 months ago. I will try to find the link but don't wait on me. You can look at FMSCA site and probably find it yourself. They have a 800 number to call as well for verification.

You first need to input the DOT# or MCC on the safer link. Has a toll free number to order a more in-depth or you can order online, with a fee of course. You first need to input the DOT# or MCC.
