I have 6 trucks and 7 trailers. One of the trucks is an O/O. We started our company in Feb. 2009. We don't smoke , drink or do drugs and yes we have 3 kids. All of our equipment is paid for.
Now back to your question "Help with how much $ we can make"
I know friends that sold their trucks or walked away from them because they were loosing their shirts. In the late 80's loads were paying $2.00 per mile and this when fuel was $.90 per gallon, insurance around $800 per year and truck payments around $500 per month.
Today you are paying over $4.00 per gallon for fuel, insurance over $15,000 per year and $3,000 per month truck payments. If you think that $1.35 per mile is a good rate then you need to rethink what you want to do.
I'm not being negative about this, I'm being realistic. What's going to hurt you is your $3,000 a month truck payment and not knowing how many miles you will receive per month.
No company will guarantee XXXX amount of mileage per month, period.
If your wife is an accountant then with the information given to you she can figure out how many miles you have to do per month to make good money.
Eventually the economy is going to pick up and rates will increase. The rates need to be around $3.00 per mile to make a good living. Good Luck!

why would you not want to run in the states?
you make more money--better roads so your profit per mile will actually be more
actual truck stops--dont have to sleep at snow plow turnout
there are lots of triangle runs--TO to van thru canada--then down to cali and back to TO
but i guess its up to you--maybe you cant get into us i dont know---
but i do know its a hell of a lot easier driving in us than canada -
I like to run in the States but can think of a few reasons not to.
70 in 7. 13 hours driving. Workable split berth option. No border hassles. No randoms pee tests if the company doesn't operate in the U.S. I'm sure there are others. -
yes those are all valid points for not running us
myself i just like the variaty of not being on the same road all the time -
We will not run in the usa. Canada rocks! enough said.

Sounds like a crock of BS to me. Has a new truck , but not yet signed on with a carrier , no idea of the Cost of Plates or Insurance , wants to run safe stay on top of the paperwork but now thinks he can sign on anyplace.
Most carriers will not touch you as Owner Operator without having experience and proven track record. -

well said there flatbed--plus i get the feeling he hasnt hit the big road yet--ok yes canada rocks ---but when you have to slow down to 45 mph cause the road is pounded out--or stuck behind a motor home for 45 miles till the next passing lane--i bet those interstates look pretty #### good
and 4 grand a month payment??????? -
How about Sales Tax??? The only place you don't have to pay it is when you Pro-Rate for Alberta.
