well about 2 years ago i had almost a definite job at a company and i was going to need the hazmat endorsement. being the proactive working young man i am, i went out and did the test, got scheduled for the finger printing, paid the 90 or whatever dollar it was to have it done along with the background check. well the job didnt pan out because i failed their computer personality test. anyway, i'd like to go get it, question is, do i need to start over from the beginning? if not where do i go? one of the most confusing things was where i go to get finger printed etc. i could use some advice, after reading this board, i think my next move as a truck driver is to get into a LTL company where i can make more money, maybe not for a few years as i'd like to get a solid employment record with a company. but none the less, i think thats where the best money is for what my needs are. i need a job where i can work hard, i like driving trucks, i dont want to be OTR. LTL i think is the best fit for me. thanks!!

    Go check with the DMV.
Did you do the finger printing and background check already? If so they should have it on record.
Then all you would need to do is take the test again. The test is a must, since you have to retake it every 2 years anyway.
The background check they should only need to do once.

Don't know what state you are referring to, but all that I know of renew every 4 years. Additionally the background check is required (383.141 (d)) every 5 years, or when the CDL is transferred, renewed or upgraded. I don't know of any reg to specifically cover this drivers circumstances, but my bet is he starts over. Since it appears he tested, and scheduled the fingerprinting but didn't actually say he did it (So I'll assume he did not), the state may just let him go with it, forgo the test and do the F/P background check.

Hope it is the easy way for him.

    Best regards

Chrome Dome no you don't have to be retested every 2 years for Hazmat. Mine is good for 5 years. The 2 year thing is when a company hauls Hazmat they have "refresh" their driver on the company's hazmat policies. o.m.d. if you didn't gte Hazmat on your CDL you have to redo everything for Hazamt.

typically the finger printing "approval" stays on record for 90 days.....

you are past his time frame.

you must pay all over again and pay for the hazmat testing itself to get the endorsement.

i think mass has a 5 year license...?? if so, every 5 years you MUST re-take the finger prints, and re-take the hazmat written test to keep the endorsement.

save all your receipts as this can be used at tax time for "work related" expenses.

i don't see how you could have taken ANY hazmat test FIRST, BEFORE you got Homeland/FBI approval......??? you NEED the approval FIRST, then you take the test....

you have to go where ever Mass has the finger printing site.

Where do you live omd and I can tell you where to go.

Maybe I'm mixing it up with the TWIC background check, but I remember being offered on one of them paying X amount to line up with my CDL expiration or paying Y amount for 5 years. You ever move out of state, you have to redo the background regardless.

anyway i want to make much more, i know having a hazmat will get me there, and having a hazmat will be a must once i get into LTL delivery. thanks for the replies so far guys.
