So, you think WalMart, the Malls, and pretty much every grocery store are going to eat the expense to relocate and build so that they have a dock facing a railway?

    Doubt it.

You going to be willing to drive to where the rail is for anything you want in your city?

    Doubt it.

Useless streets? I live in the country outside of Charlotte, and even HERE there is no such thing as a "useless street". How many useless streets do you see near a mall? Grocery store? Seriously....

Im speaking of long haul trucking. For drayage there are plenty of hungry mexicans with trucks who will take it from the rail head to the mall for a small fee.

WIth the republicans insisting on cutting taxes and the deficit, who is going to pay for the upkeep of the interstate highway system? It is over 50 years old and due for a massive rebuild, that I doubt "the people" are willing to pay for.

I am sure more than a few Republicans hold stock in some form of rail corporation.

Not to mention the subsidy that is given to the rail will disappear, then what?

Wont need to subsidize rail when all the business is driven their way by using the excuse of "the environment" to get trucks off the highways.

Typically Republicans will cry crocodile tears and blame Democrats for it while cashing in on all the profits.

I hate to say it, but rail is not even close to being dead. It is growing like crazy and i mean for the cross country long haul. The big otr companies are sending all there long haul by rail as in piggyback. No road use tax, no fuel, no whinning drivers to take care of and so on. The rail infrastructure is already in place, just need local drivers to haul out of rail yards. They said ' you will never haul produce by rail ' well giess again, they have been doing that for years now. If you doubt me, you can go to Rochelle Il. which i call the cold storage capitol of the midwest and look at all the reefer box cars. or just take a drive along I 294 south of O'Hare Field and down by I 55 and look at the monster rail yards. Hate to say it, but railroads are not even close to going byebye.

Okay, can we get back to the topic rather than talk politics?

It is obvious that you are a follower of the train.

I personally have no objection to the thought of them. However, I just do not see them as an effective alternative to the truck.

The trucking industry is basically the time sensitive warehouse for many industries. It will be almost impossible for the train to deal with this.

It is refreshing to see your point of view and I do respect it.

My reason for the projection request is not meant as confrontational. It is just a point that these comments lead to possible predictions.
