    OK, more info.

Talked to the doc today and he said my AHI was 9 and anything over 5 was not normal but he says I only have a mild case of sleep apnea and that my blood oxygen never dropped bellow normal.

The APAP im getting is the Phillips Respironics System One with the Humidifier and Data kit.

The cool thing is they financed it for me with no credit check and no down payment. Only $50.00 a month. sale price was $1350.00 so Im pretty happy overall.

    wulfman75 Thanks this.

I have used a company that is even cheaper- they do the test for 199.00 and cpap for 1350.00 and do interest free financing- and they will work with you on a downpayment!

I have sleep apnea and already have my machine, buT the issue is that I got laid off and lost my insurance and moved out of state, how do I go about getting a release from my doctor, will I have to go back to them, or will he send my release to me?

Actually, if you have a card in there, the company that did your study and prescribed the c-pap should have set you up with a machine that has a downloadable card. If so, contact that company and ask them to do a download for you for compliance. Your DOT physician should be able to read this download and release you:)

Hi Everyone! How are you today? I'm pissed off! My husband has been a trucker for almost 20 years and about three month's ago his company's doctor told him that he would like him to go to the sleep clinic unless my husband's personal doctor says he doesn't have to. Well my husband's doctor faxed the company doctor telling them she didn't believe my husband needed to go. Well guess what - today the company doctor said he has to go - period! The company doctor only issued my husband a one month DOT physical!

The amazing part about all this is is that we live in a very small town [just got a sleep clinic about 40 miles away about 3 years ago]. The sleep study costs about $3000.00 and you are required to rent a machine from a company the clinic works with. The rent is $600.00 the first month and if everything works well with the machine then you buy it for another $600.00! The company is not paying for this! The expect us to pay for it! Are you kidding me?!?!

And of course he would need a machine installed in his truck and one for home! I don't understand how they can make you go and have a sleep study done and then pay for those machines?!?!

Does anyone have any ideas where my husband can go that's cheap? We are currently paying off over $80,000.00 medical bills! Have you ever heard of someone going to the sleep clinic and not having sleep apnea? I think this whole thing is a big joke!!!

Any ideas would be great - and thanks for the help

I used to work for a sleep study company. About 30% of the truck drivers we tested .... they came to us and paid for testing out of their own pocket... did NOT test positive for sleep apnea.

The real issue is how well the people being sent to a sleep lab are screened for sleep apnea before being sent to the lab. With a good screening only the people really needing the test are sent to the lab.. then you will have a high percentage positive for sleep apnea. Even the best screeening programs have about a 10% negative for sleep apnea testing rate.

$ 3,000 for an in-lab study is pretty steep. Check out home sleep study tests. There are a couple reputable companies. Check places like the Dave Nemo show or OOIDA for reccomendations. You can get a home study for a lot less.

If your husband actually has sleep apnea you will want him to get tested and treated.

It is #$$%# what some sleep companies are trying to do.... but sleep apnea is real and more of us than want to admit it have it and need to get treated.

Did you read my original post here? The doctor I used is only 250.00, and they will do the test anywhere in the country.

If he has sleep apnea, he doesnt have to have 2 machines. The machine is small and mobil, so he can use it in the truck, and take it home when he is home. For the machine they like to have 500 down, but they will work with yoiu if you dont have the cash. You just pay 50 a month for it.

If you want my docs info just let me know.
