Dispatcher/Company my truck is leased to

    One more thing....In "your" own opinion is better to get your own authority (mc no. ca no. usdot etc.)? Rather than running using someone's elses? Is paying the 10% better than the headaches (finding/booking/coordinating loads/paying fuel tax/making sure in your compliance with all the laws)? Thank you in advance for your opinions. You're a great group of guys.

    That's a tough one, and you're the only one who can answer it for yourself. For me, in a word, yes, I'm doing better with my own authority than when I was leased to a carrier. I've only had my authority since August, and I've been surprised at the business I've gotten just because my customer/broker just has to make one phone call to get ahold of the owner, dispatcher, safety director, secretary, head mechanic, credit department, and driver. Being able to make a fast decision is worth money to people when they need something done six hours ago.

    On the other hand, if you're in a situation where the folks you're leased to always pay on time, give you plenty of good paying work, and do all the legwork for you for their 10%, I'd say stick with it. You also need to be very well capitalized (or have a very strong stomach) if you're going to be totally independent.

    Do yourself a favor.....Get in your rig....take it back to where you bought it from......

    Do some serious reading and work for a small carrier......Otherwise...based on what you posted....You are going to lose that rig anyway......

    I don't mean to be an azzhat.....But...you are in over your head.......

    I already have full time career(s). This is yet another side business for me. Rig and trailer are already paid for (saved for awhile). Just needed the guidance from veterans such as yourself and everyone else on here as to the ins and outs of the business. Gathering intel from professionals with hands on is much better than reading an article in my own opinion. I can get a feel for not only the O/O (myself) side of it but also the driver's point of view. For instance, prior to joining this site, I didn't know that an agent/carrier charging 10% was average or that a load of dry goods from CA to NJ averages anywhere from $4300 to $5500. In the last few posts I have learned to appreciate the driver and all that he/she does for a company. I've also learned to watch out for brokers and carriers as they can bend you over and take it to you. So while I appreciate your idea that I should take my rig back and give up on yet another money making venture, I think I'll opt to continue to learn from those that want to teach me. When and if my trucking business blows up (fingers and toes crossed) I will treat my drivers and employees with respect because thats how everyone should be treated. I'm sure in the future newbies (such as myself) will join and ask the same questions that I've inquired about. I will inturn help them as you guys have helped me. BTW, if you have served our country, I want to thank you for all that you do.

    IMHO....

    If you are not going to drive and deal with all of the crapola...Then please don't buy a rig....

    Sure Donald Trump can buy a fleet of rigs and put drivers to work...But unless you have had to deal with getting loaded at 9 pm on a 7 am appointment; Driven in ice and snow without taking out a soccer-mom; received two level 1's in one day....by the same state....

    Unless you have been broke-down in BFE and had to work on your rig in the middle of the night with the raining beating you silly.....
    Please don't buy a rig and put a driver on it.....You have no clue....And reading about it...isn't the same thing as being there....
