The miles at this company are based off of how you, the driver, are as a Driver. I been running into a few of the new guys that re coming out of the con over terminal and are not so happy about the miles, and they re only in their second week of driving, one thing that has to be understood is that none of the dispatchers know who you are or why type of person you are, they don't no if you are dependable or not..you have ti build a relationship with them, get an understanding of eachother, build trust in each other... And always do favors no matter how big or how small.
I'm well known in the company as a " brown nosier " " ##* kisser" and many more I'm sure...however, I run nothing less then 3,000 a week, sometimes 2,882 If I'm unlucky enough to pull one crappy load.
I do kiss ##* but get the miles i want and get home exactly when I want to be home for exactly how long I wanna be there.
Its not dispatch that makes you crack out here. Only you can make it work for you. Drving for 2weeks then telling someone your not happy cause of the lack of miles your getting and wanting to quit already is going to you and your family. Like any job, you need to give it time, learn the ropes, more then 2 or 5 weeks. Many people, and possibly some of you are out here now cause their was nothing els to do, that's gonna make it harder, as opposed to the guy that wants to be out here, but you need to give it time, show disp that you are here to make money and not sit around,
I say this all the time, ** do not use the word *** NO*** to disp** unless your truck is in the shop or your so sick you can't drive, get rid of that word NO completely out of your vocabulary now! Even if your truck is in the shop, most terminals have a spare truck or two, might be a day cab, but he'll that will only make the job easier for you, ask for a spare truck. Always ask for local work when sitting at a terminal, always offer to do favors for whoevers disp area you are in, when disp calls and ask for a favor, DO IT. All of this will pay off, take me for example, even a few on here will tell you " yeah, soon2be has it made ". Because I do all of the above and I get my way.
Yes their are times when I don't, but only because whatever it is that I want is not available.
I run a dedicated run between 2 of our terminals on the east coast, go home when I want, and even take random days off just for no good reason( well, actually a very good reason, but I'd like some of my life to remain my own personal life ) I'll ask at the last second forna day or 4 days off and I'm never told no or asked any questions,
Ask the 2 realativly new guys that do a meet n greet out of calf/phnx if they got that run bybsaying no or giving disp a hard time, or the one local drive that was a big poster on here if he got that local job by being lazy and always refusing a load, even if it went to NJ, he went where he had to go, they did what they were asked to do.
If you as your asked your job will be so much better because your making the money you want to be making, if you want to be lazy and come into this industy with the " I'll drive a truck and get rich quick cause they do is drive from point A to point B " then your in for a he'll of a shock.
-- i know that I'm not " welcomed " in the w/s "DAC" section by some of my fellow posters from some major disagreements regarding thisbdac section, however it's still an open forum and my thoughts and opinions are welcome for the new guys to read,
----- in addition, I'd like to thank the current avid posters who continue to posts about their time from training to the truck to the road, when new people look at the ws webpage under the employment section it says " just the facts!!". It's because of us that they can stand behind that saying, cause they have this public open forum where people can do just that, "Get The Facts"
Good luck to all you new guys starting off, with what I like to think, is a great company.

Thanks for the advise, I'm heading to Conover tomorrow!!!!!!!
-
Jail cells are getting filled by ......
the drivers that won't say NO !!!!
That is NOT necessary in order to make a good living.
You must learn how and when to say NO !!!! -
theres really no reason to say no, they dont really throw anything unrealistic at you, here anyway. if you are sending ALL your qcomms and they have an accurate idea of your hours you wont have to tell them no, even if its hey i dont have the hours for this. i have only had to say "no" a couple times when the truck broke, and even then i didnt say NO i said hey truck broke i dont think i can make it on time, what do you want me to do? there ya go.
im a little shocked how many guys have told me they dont even send qcomms until they are empty. -
You state there is no reason to say no.
but yet, you have told them No !!!!!
Which is it !!!! -
I've never turned down a load just because I didn't want it, I've been givin loads that were already late and told dispatch theres no way to get it there on time and they have been able to move the delivery date or time back no problem. The only load I was given but didnt take was the one they tried to give me when I was on my way to the shop.......My truck had a HOLE in the radiator and was blowing Anti-Freeze everywhere, and I ran it like that for 2 weeks while the parts came in and they routed me back to the shop. I wasn't going to keep driving further into the winter with pure water in there and crack the block just to take the load.
I would never just say NO because I don't want a particular load, I'm here to work and make money. I find it much easier to just do whatever they ask.
Good to see you posting again S2B!
American Truckersoon2betrucking Thanks this. -
i ever said no, pay attention. think back to when you learned punctuation and what these little squiggles can mean "". like sarcasm. i just keep them posted on the situation, put the ball in their court. if they want to cancel the load, its on them, if they are able to push back a pickup ill still go.
and the only time i have ever run over hours was because of nyc, and that wasnt their fault or mine, just the stupid town. they have never asked me to do anything that coulnt be done. if that day ever comes, i will let them know i cant make it on time, if they still insist i do it i will just do it and be late. still no reason to say no.
communicating with dispatch both helps them/you AND covers your ###, some people overlook that part of it.
with other companies i couldnt agree more with telling them to go fly a kite, but these guys have it together and thats why i enjoy working here. -
I don't work for W/S, but know the Conover terminal. Conover hauls a LOT of new furniture. They have these loads because they came in, cut the rates on the established carriers, and even undercutting what the companies that ran their own fleets could haul for. They then made up the difference by using new drivers and paying much lower wages than what was normally being paid. This put many experienced furniture haulers out of work. I'm not here complaining about this, it is what it is.
That being said, as a furniture hauler from way back, you will not rack up the miles hauling sticks. You have receivers that start at 9 or 10 AM, and quit before 5. You can only get so many stops off a day, even if you run like a mad man, don't eat, and beg the receiver to take you early or late. That's the nature of stick hauling. Hopefully the stop pay wil make up for the lack of miles. From what I read here the furniture loads are broken up with other types of freight, which helps, but multi-stop loads will kill your weekly miles. -
Great Post, S2B. You just put our profession and how to make money in our particular company in a nutshell.
As for what another poster said about saying no or not....we know you don't say NO to loads you can LEGALLY run, but only to ones you can't. As AT said, if you send in your daily check calls, dispatch should have a fairly good idea of your available hours.
Oh, and our company, they know multi-stop loads kill miles, so they pay you pretty good for the stops. Some drivers make more on stop pay than on miles and it works for them.
Welcome to the dark side, S2B....LOLsoon2betrucking and kenl3417 Thank this.
