My husband sent in all the information to get his Diabetes Waiver from the Federal Motor Carriers in August. Since then they have called twice wanting more info, (which we immediately sent back). He called on November 1st to see what stage it was in and was told, they were finishing up with the case and he would know something within 30 days. He applied a couple of years ago and within 30 days they turned him down. So we are hopeful. Does anyone have any input on how positive this length of time seems? What are the next steps? I would appreciate any comments!

The FMCSA states that waiver decisions may take up to 120 days. In the case of a diabetic though I believe "waiver" is incorrect. As far as I know there is no such thing as a waiver for diabetes.

I believe the correct term is diabetes "exemption" rather than waiver. The FMCSA must make a determination on exemptions within 180 days from the date "all" information is submitted by the applicant.

On the previous denial. Once one is determined eligible, the applicants request for an exemption is published twice in the Federal Registry and a 30 day comment period. If he was denied within 30 days it never made it to the Fed Reg.

    Best regards

Let me know how this turns out because I'm pretty close to this myself. I don't know how the gov't can make decisions over this issue. Especially over the phone or through the mail. Either you're a diabetic or you're not. I guess if you can demonstrate you know how to keep your sugar balanced they feel more comfortable with giving you a chance. What's hard is it takes is excercise and a good diet to accomplish where he's at. You get back on the road your food choices are limited. Good luck and I wish you and your husband the best.

I have the waiver that you are talking about and it takes 180 days after being posted in the Federal Register. The ADA is fighting for a final ruling for this exemption right now. There is no reason to take comments for 180 days when you have a $250/visit endrocrinologist over-seeing your insulin regiment. He is the one that is calling the shots because you have to go see him with a mini checklist that has to be sent in every quarter. Good luck with this waiver, once you get it, they are actually doing this the right way.

The main reason this waiver is being granted is the new insulin called Lantus. Its a slow acting insulin that doesnt have a spike to it. Its much safer for truckers to use. You take one shot at night before bed, and it works for 24 hours.

hello all, i just got my waiver like 2 weeks ago. now i am having trouble finding a job. i just got my cdl in oct. and i didnt think it would be such a big deal. it seems like any one i talk to doesn't have a clue what the waiver is. i fax it to different companies and then the waiting game begins, just to be turned down. has anybody that has gotten this waiver found a job after getting the waiver. i am just about ready to give up.

Dont mention the waiver to anyone before your physical.. When they ask you to list what meds you are taking, give them a copy of the waiver. You now have an exemption from the rules and it is a non-issue.

delta if i did that , then 9 times out of 10 it seems i would be sent home. most of the companies i talked to said they dont hire if you are on insulin. i was just denied a job because my morning glucose readings were in the 90's instead of 100 or above that the waiver states it needs to be before you can start driving. then you have to check it evry 2 to 4 hours and it has to be above 100 again to continue to drive. the compnay that didnt hire me said it was to risky to hire me with those numbers. i talked to the people that ceal with the waiver, and they said it was what the DOT wanted before drivers where able to move. i have 1 more iron in the fire if that doesnt pan out i think i am going to give up my dream
