A New Heart-Health Program for Truckers--Feedback Requested!

Hello! I am a health outreach coordinator at a non-profit called the Hope Heart Institute. We provide heart disease prevention education in schools and communities. We’re in the process of developing a free heart health program specifically for truckers called Truckers Take Heart™, and we need your thoughts and feedback as part of the development process!


We’ll be putting out a more formal survey soon, but for now, I’d like to just tell you a bit about the basics of the program and see what you all think. Mainly I want to know if this would be useful for you, and if you’re likely to take advantage of something like this.



We want to make sure that the program takes into account the trucking lifestyle, and that it will be effective within the limitations that you face in the industry—difficulty accessing healthy food, long hours sitting, stress, sleep issues, not a lot of opportunities for exercise, etc. I know that many of you are working hard to improve your health in spite of the difficulties, and we want this program to offer the best support possible to you.


Here are few questions:
1.

Would it be helpful for you to have a phone or online chat meeting once a week with a personal health coach, who would help you:
· Set health goals
· Stay on track with taking actions towards goals
· Offer practical support and encouragement?

2. If we were to offer a “health starter kit” to you, what items would you find the most helpful? (Some of the things we’re considering are a set of weights, a pedometer, healthy dry food items such as oatmeal and cut veggies with dip, a booklet on fitness tips for the road, and weekly goal tracking sheets).

3. Would you willing to fill out an application in order to be accepted into the program?

4. Would you be willing to have a free screening at the beginning and end of the program to check for blood pressure, blood sugar, triglycerides, cholesterol , and BMI? (Results would be kept anonymous).

5. What do you think would be MOST helpful for you in a health program specifically geared toward your profession?
