That looks good on paper gross wise, but after expences and taxes what's left? Also with the time in order to do that, Loading and unloading driving and such, by the time you get home you just in time for bed to get up early to go back out again.
I drove for a guy doing just that. Last week he had me running in Atlanta deleivering Cement Blocks. 3 to 4 loads average. I was paid 20.00 per load. Leave the house at 3Am and got home around 8 Pm. Was 60.00 to 80.00 per day worth it? No.
With another Job, I would run 800 miles runs each way round trip. 2 trips per week. Home for the weekend, But dead tired. 3200+ miles. Same COmpany did a different load different route. Left out of Athens Ga on Saterday 2 Drops in Neb, 1 drop in Co and last Drop in Bismark ND. Reloaded and deleivered in PA. Picked up in Pittsburg, PA and delievered in Athens Sunday Drove 4200 miles got home and was ready to go again.
Running short hauls only may make you money but it will also bring you more health problems. When you burn your self out running hard with little rest, your body will take the blunt of it.
The Guy I drove for doing the Cement Blocks eventually got out of it. Was not making money at it in the long run. He remain with his dump trucks and left the OTR.
Just my 1/2 cents worth.

Coastie it takes the right deal to be able to make local work. Obviously the guy you worked for was clueless.
-
The right deal may not be where everyone is at also. Never know.
He did well with his Dumptruck business. OTR not so well.
My bigest point in order to run the short hauls and make anything you'll be killing your self. Only way not to is to make 4.00 to 5.00 per mile. Not going to happen often unless and that is a Gaint Unless you have that Perfect catch which is far and few in between.
He was not doing anthing different that what Matt said he was doing. -

Matt I think your math is a bit off or some thing. I came up with $7140 gross for the week. Dunno maybe I fat fingered the $0.99 calculator I used.
But assuming I'm right you are grossing a little over twice what I did in $2006 with one truck running OTR.
BUT! your guys are home every night, I was gone 237 nights in 2006. There are some trade offs in local versus OTR, one of them being you will not run nearly as many miles to make that same revenue, THAT is a good thing.
For crap and giggles what was your total miles driven last year with your trucks. Mine was 112,000. -
Not on book's around 62K. Remember we just got another local truck.
-
Matt I was not trying to Pick it to death. Sorry if I came across that way. I just do not see it happening and profitable to the most part.
You posted your numbers and It looks to be. But your being lucky.
I did run one on paper to see what it would be like. Giving the Short count on time Loading straping and if need be Tarping, and just driving 150 mile run and a 250 mile run, it would take 12 hours to complete it all.
I wish you all the Luck. I know I could not and would not be putting my self through that pressure. Have before and It not healthy to do so.
Good Luck with it. -
All the best,
Matt
