Recently got my 1A at North Shore Driving School in Burnaby. So far from what I see companies don't hire unless you have some experience. It's been about a week now and I'm applying everywhere and following up. Where does a newbie get a break?
How did you guys start in this industry? Does anyone know who hires new drivers in or around Vancouver? The industry needs to get new people driving so the positions can be filled in the future.....
Thanks,
g

Some companies offer a mentoring program. Find out which ones and be persistent.
Make sure you are an attractive prospect for a potential hire. Be flexible when it comes to work hours, type of work and so on.
My first job was driving a garbage truck. It wasn't horrible but it got my foot in the door with a new company.
You may have to go through a few bad employers before you get some experience, but with more experience comes more opportunities. It is worth the slog if you ask me. -
You can also do dual job description. Like Dock worker and driver. Work the dock unloading trailers and wait for the opportunity.

Starline Windows in Port Kells is a place where a few drivers (myself included) got started out at. Not the greatest place, lots of heavy lifting but with no experience you can't be too choosy. Some of the container companies may look at you too. TMR might be looking also.

Thanks for the replies. I think up north is probably the best bet for getting on somewhere where they fully train you and you don't take a huge pay cut while you learn.
I didn't get my class 1 to make 15 bucks an hour (some companies seem to think this is ok), or did I get it so I have to do heavy labor. Maybe some companies up North you may have to bust hump but at least your making 25+ to start. I worked on the rigs before so I know how it goes. Maybe I can get on a fluid truck or something like that.
I applied everywhere and will be doing follow ups. I will keep you posted on my status.
For now its unemployed in Vancouver city......too many 'people' with a class 1 here. If you look on job bank there are way better jobs in Alberta and Northern BC that according to job bank canada require "no experience".

Still havent found a job in the industry yet. What ever happened to applying for jobs... and people call you back? Vancouver is a horrible place for a new driver to start out especially if you don't have your own vehicle.
I might have a job in Fort McMurray but not any time soon since I have to wait for someone to leave. Does anyone know anyone who hires newbies? I'm not about to lie on my resume. -
Stay away from the **removed** out fits. Go to alberta. I'd say you screwed your self by not going through a truck driving School that would help you get a job. Try H&R transport. We to will not go into the USA, yuck. good luck

I got my start by actually dropping in to the warehouse's with resume in hand, and asking to talk to the boss. Low pay and hard labor for the first couple months, then moved on to a couple of better jobs.
Now I'm driving for Pepsi out in the Prairies, $24/hr but still hard work... Looking to drive in the oil patch this winter to make some good $$$. Also roughnecked for a couple of outfits, but it only takes 1 loser on a crew to bring everyone down. I got sick of dealing with other peoples personal problems, so I went to Pepsi.
For anyone looking to gain experience, hauling Anhydrous Ammonia in the spring time is always a good bet. The Agriculture companies are usually desperate for drivers in the Prairies, but that only lasts 2-4 weeks.
