On my way back from Colorado I stopped at the TA in Limo Colorado for a short break. I parked towards the northern end of the lot and while I was walking to the building I saw a nice KW 900 set up for heavy haul. Tag axle on the truck and tri axle trailer. Anyway I will let the picture speak for itself. :biggrin_25513:

Notice the direction of the drivers side tire vs. the passenger side tire. The truck was running and the driver was still inside. That truck was not going to leave on its own it was going to need a wrecker. How would you handle this situation if you were the one in the KW?

Nothing you can do but get a police report and file a insurance claim.
Slim chance the TA has video. Most record the fuel islands only.

The sad thing is, someone had to do that backing into the spot next to him, and it would even been where he/she should have been able to watch and know that they were running over the corner of the truck. You couldn't do that damage by just brushing the truck. I guess someone might have done a pull thru in the opposite direction. That would be more likely as it would be the blind side.

That same thing happend to me at a pilot in GA. On exit 16 or so off I95 .. I stoped for fuel and something to eat. I pump my diesel , pulled forward and went to pay for my fuel.. At that pilot right in front of the pumps there it a wall, so you have to make a tight right turn to exit.. well the truck on my right I guess did'nt make the turn and backed up did'nt see my truck and bang.. pretty much the same damaged but my wheels did'nt loose alingment like that kw did so I was able to drive it home.... There was no video camara and no one saw anything..what a day ...I ran thru that whole truck stop looking for a white and blue truck (the colors left on my pete) but nothing.. Thats the worst felling ever.. I felt like if everyone was in on it and nobody wanted to tell me anything.....and I had no physical damged insurance so I was screwed Having to buy a new hood for my pete..

from first view, it would appear that it was a "high speed" hit rather than a normal crawling speed. i mean, at a normal crawl speed, one would have felt the "bump" and stopped. it would also seem to look like it was done from a blind side as well. i'm wondering if a trucker was p.o'd about something and wanted to leave the truck stop, then had this accident.

next, it would also appear that the other vehicle involved would have been a now boy as the hit to the bumper and tire is too low for an ordinary trailer. even given the ICC bumper, that is way too much damage.

lastly, i would have also thought the accident took place else where and the tow truck dropped off the wreck at that truck stop, but the parts on the ground, would not support that theory.

what ever the case, i had been forbidden by one employer to stay away from a particular truck stop in VA, near Winchester due to such hit and runs, so they wanted me to stay at the drop yard instead.....no facilities from 7 PM till 7 AM......yeah......where do you think i "really" stayed at....??

I agree with Rerun. That was definitely a high speed impact! Especially to have done all that damage and not hardly move the cab of the truck. What is really sad is that you will never get the frame back to straight. Especially on a W-9. They are long frames and the slightest tweak will burn up your steers. Well my condolences to that guy. Crappy day!

The truck was running and there's debris on the ground, so it probably happened there. "High speed"? Maybe, whatever that means, but it's insane how little it takes to take off or damage a truck hood. The hoods are just fiberglass or thermoplastic. And some of those bumpers are just for looks anyway.

I've been on the receiving end of this kind of thing twice, once at the Flying J on top of the Grapevine, once at the Laredo Pilot. Both times it was hit and run; both times the drivers were caught; both times, the cops were there within minutes. The first time I thought, oh well, these things happen. The second time I was ready to club the guy with my tire thumper (my wife restrained me. smart woman). He said he didn't know. Both times the drivers' carriers' insurance covered everything, including my down-time. Was a bit of a struggle the second time. The first driver was fired. Don't know about the second driver.

At the Aurora, OR Pilot, I saw and heard a Swift driver clip a United Van Lines W900. He started to pull away. I ran over, told him I'd seen everything and had his truck number. Then I ran inside and shouted for United; guy ran to his KW to sort things out. If you see this stuff, report it--don't let the jerks get away with it.

Thanks again, Sportster2000, for the thread. Did you take the pic?

I meant "high speed" in that it didn't happen with the normal backing speed. Not necessarily someone doing over 55mph. For the wheel to sustain damage like that it had to be a good hit! Also the grill wasn't touched so maybe a flatbed or something like it was the culprit. Whatever it was, that really sucks bad! This poor guys is going to be out of work for awhile until they can fix that one! Hopefully insurance will provide him a loaner truck.

I agree it was a major hit. Shake you right out of the bunk. Or you come out from getting a shower and your truck's AFU. Yeah, he's going to be out of work for awhile; I took a three-week "vacation" when that jerk hit us in Laredo; didn't try to get a loaner, just billed 'em for lost revenue. I can still hear him: "I didn't know." Come to think of it, he was a flatbedder, empty, and he ripped the grill right off the hood. Our truck was exactly, to-the-day, six months old. Ehh, I don't even like to think about it!
