You know if the government would quit helping everyone else and ignoring the transportation industry, they might consider putting a little regulation on all these brokers who rape freight the way they do and let the folks that do the real work make a living.
Take Florida for instance. You can not (at least in my experience) get a decent paying broker load out of that state. The last one that was offered to me and I flat turned down was .66 cpm for 1000 miles. Traditionally with every trip I have made down there my company can not find a load out of that state that has paid me anything better than a rookie company driver after fuel. It's insane. I absolutely refuse to haul anyones freight for free PERIOD..!!!
What I have found is that if I deadhead 450 miles north, I can get loaded in SC and still make better money on the return trip than if I would have took brokered freight out of Florida. ALL the brokers down there play that rape game with no exceptions that I have found yet.

Which Patterson? Patterson Truck Brokers, or Sam Patterson?

Sam Patterson is a produce broker that I haul for regularly, and I will say that they don't suck.

I've also seen "Patterson Truck Brokers" on the boards but have never hauled for them.

You must be pulling a van.

I am loading right now in Florida for $1750 to Memphis. I just booked a load for Saturday for $1150 to Winston Salem,NC. I obviously don't pull a van though, and you are right in the fact that about 6 months of the year the rates in Florida even for us reefer guys totally suck.
