I see this EVERY night! When you're going through small towns and you see a red light, don't just rush up to the light and stop! Slow down and give yourself some time for the light to change. That way you are starting to pick up speed from a rolling start, rather than starting at nothing. Even if you slow down to 3 mph, it will still get you moving faster than if you were completely stopped.
Every day and night I go through a town with something like seven stoplights and probably about 10 more on my route and every night I get some dink pissed off because I pass him up so he wants to race me. Now I just let him go because I know when we get to the next town I'll just find him sitting at some stop light while I go right by him because I timed it so I didn't have to stop! By the time I get through town, I am so far ahead of him he doesn't have a hope in hell of catching me even if he was speeding, which he probably would be.
Learn to time the stop lights!
