Wanna have some fun? Verizon and, I think, Singular have put out the next generation of aircards. The original aircards plugged into your PCMCIA port, that was the big one. Second generation plugged into USB ports because all information always runs faster through the USB port... until... third generation aircards, faster yet, because it plugs into the PCI express port.
Huh? Exactly. Go to Best Buy, Century City, et al.; ask the geek to show you the laptop with the PCI Express port. Not one of them has any idea what you are talking about. The most fun is the geek at the Walmart; that guy doesn't even know what a laptop is. My cousin has been the "computer guy" for three different, very large, telecom companies for twelve years. His job is to know everything about computers, it's all he does, he's paid extraordinarily well for being the guru. It took him three days to find out what a PCI Express port is and he still can't find a laptop that has one.
I love computers. If cars were this troublesome, we'd all be riding bicycles. -
I gave up my sprint card when I took a local logging job and thought i would like it,too many hours and the pay was up and down. I went back to one of my old over the road companies in maine, running midwest and back. I went to augusta maine shopping for a verizon deal,on the internet its free after rebates for the card. At circuit city they wanted 149.95 for the card and would not set it up for free, you have to pay extra,I then went to a verizon dealer in augusta near the state house across from pats pizza, there I found my best deal,131.25 for the setup complete,he even set it up and ran it to show me that it worked for free, also filled out the 50.00 rebate forms and envelope all filled out, everything but the stamp to send it,only because they ran out. I will be paying a 35.00 one time connect fee and 79.95 a month unlimited 24 hrs a day and no roaming charges. It would be only 59.95 if I had verizon cell phone plans but I am on sprint until nov 07 then will switch. My sprint card would not work in upper northern maine from portland up.my verizon card is working at home here now and I don't need my router now. I have verizon broadband on my home pc also. Also this verizon card supports the new vista also. I am so glad to have my laptop again, spent 3 weeks out without it and really missed it. Just wanted to share my story with you all.

I'm on verizion. It's ll I have now. I paid a bit extra for the usb modem so I can plug it in my desktop pc when I get home.
The modem works great, I wish there phones were as good. They are okay but us cellular had better phone service.
US cell told me the other day that you can get an aircard through them nw. Technicaly you are supposed to have a business accont with them but the lady told me that if you have a regular phone you can call them and they can clear you to get an aircard. You can't just walk in the store though and get it.
Verizion card is $59 a month if you have a verizion phone too. $79 a month if you don't -
I have it on my laptop
it's ok in just about every state accept Ky -n- Wy
just like my cell ph in Wy it bites in the whole state of Wy.
but once i get out of Wy it's fine -n- Ky same thing cell works card don't
accept in a ferw spots but only in a 5 mile rad of that point. -
...in my case Verizon sent me a bill for five hundred sumt, the online bill payment can block you, charge you by the minute, all kinda stuff. I liked the phone and the Nationwide Broadband, only wouldn't work once in Vermont. If your a day or two late they block your broadband card until paid.

Have Verizon Card for almost two years,$80/month is expensive but worth it.

I have the verizion usb modem. It comes with a cord that has two plugs that you plug into the laptop which doubles the power of the modem. I have not had anywhere it didn't work, only once did it drop the connection a few times but I was in a real bad place that nobody gets cell service in MS.

Anybody care to post an update on aircards for laptops, I'm all ears. I'll be on the road in a month or two and am considering getting one (leaning toward verizon) to the exclusion of getting a cellphone. I'v been using yawho phone-out service @ a penny/min. The quality is sucky at times(echo/drags), other times fine.
Obviously, laptops aren't as convienent as cell phones for ordinary conversation. But I'm pretty tight with my dough and can't see getting both cell and aircard. So I'm thinking I'll go w/o cell, and go with aircard until it proves otherwise. I mean with ALL the net provides, to include phone capabilities, the cell's just not as cost effective IMO.
And it's probably too much to hope for, but do sprint and verizon offer monthly service, or do they require 1/yr. contracts? And what about trials? I'll be check'n 'em out first hand, but value your oppinions greatly. Thanks!
