The perception of a negative stereotype is ingrained from a young age if you don't come from a trucking family/back round.
When you were in kindergarten or junior school the teacher would invariably at some point ask the class what they wanted to become some day.You would get the typical answers from the little boys , fireman, police man, army (meaning soldier).I don't remember what the girls aspired to as I had zero interest in them at the time .
The teacher would nod approvingly at these answers as it was the PC thing to do.Some kids who had been listening to their parents would say things like lawyer, doctor or engineer , these would get the nod and a smile. If you were really smart and wanted to impress then astronaut or even President would earn your teachers ultimate approval. Even at that age we knew "trucker" was not going to cut it and not what the teacher wanted to hear.Even if it looked cool it was not to be aimed for.Maybe it had something to do with the remarks parents made while driving past the truckers their o 4 wheelers. You know how often 4 wheeler drivers make remarks about the idiot 18 wheeler who drives towards the left when he is turning right.
Well as a trucker there is nothing you can do about any ones preconceived perceptions. What you can do is be professional and presentable. Treat people with respect , go the extra mile. You can then hold your head high and respect yourself. You can gain the respect of most and there is nothing you can do about the others. It is just one of those life truths , you are a trucker and not a rocket scientist or astronaut. Generally people are not going to respect you for what you do for a living. You can however gain their respect by who you are and how you conduct your self.

I agree with all on this matter but the damage has been done!! trucking has become the dumping ground for all of the rejects - anything from thieves to child molesters are now able to get a cdl and drive a commercial vehicle because there is a so-called driver shortage and look at what our so-called goverment has done by giving money to the companies who hire these rejects, but we did it to ourselves by not standing together and using our voice to promote ourselves in a positive manner, instead we used our voices to argue amongst ourselves and now as in the past we are running around with black eyes and wonder how we recieved them.

no not enough said, i want u all to tell me why my truck driving bf, will do anything in the world for me when hes home, then when he gets tired of being home he goes over the road, no call, no phone,no saying i word then sleeps with every woman on the way, never telling me anything like i wont know, leaving us(me an our kids)with no money and confused. plus in his mind he breaks up with me before he leaves so its ok an he lies about it anyways then after a month or so comes home, begging to come back with no money no nothing. take him back he gets a local job, then off to the #####,porn, and all the other bs. u tell me why he can love me when hes here but dont even remember or care to when hes gone an i know 3 others that do the same, whats that
