When I started talking to the recruiters at a local CDL school, they told me that they would not allow someone to attend classes unless they could get at least one pre-hire letter (OK, technically you can still attend, but it is not recommended). I had 3 pre-hires: Roehl, USXpress, and Swift. Unfortunately, I failed the road test at Roehl, so they will not be offering me a position. Ok I thought, no big deal, I still have two pre-hire companies left, right? Wrong. Neither USXpress or Swift even bothered to look at the attached Police report describing the one accident on my liscense. Now both of them pulled back their pre-hires and I am left scrambling to find another company to apply to who will take me. Central Refrigerated said they would take me, if I paid them $2000 for a 2 week course in Utah. I already paid (took at a loan for) $6100+ at 18% interest, so paying $2K more doesn't work.

I applied to Covenant and TransAm today and have a Prime application to fill out. Any ideas?

A better idea for things? What do you mean? Sorry, I didn't realize 'pre-hire' did not mean pre-hire. I also did not realize these companies don't really look at anything until you tell tem you've chosen them.

And, as I posted, I am filling out applications. The question is to who? I need advice on possible companies.

So far, I have applied to Covenant and TransAm.

Rejected by: Werner, Stevens, USXpress, and Swift. Failed Roehl.

Central is a pretty decent company. Don't wait too long or all these companies are going to make you go back to school. Good luck.

How and/or why did you fail the road test with Roehl? I remember you saying when you were in school, you had trouble passing the state roadtest.

My school trained on automatics. Only 5 shifting classes were offered and that was a month before I went to Roehl. So basically, I forgot to double clutch and shifting was either difficult or impossible.

a pre hire in my opinion is nothing more then a pre approved credit card all it means is they saw your name and they will look at you. until i get a "you start on monday" i dont consider myself hired. as far as getting a better feel for things, meaning he should have asked more questions about his record and how it'd effect his job placement. i'm not the guy to ask about OTR jobs, i dont drive OTR and never will until i can buy my own truck. these big OTR companies are a joke and make you jump threw too many hoops because the insurance companies, and who suffers? only us drivers. even if you have 10 years OTR experience, and stopped for a few years to drive locally they will still have you go take a refresher course. F that. i take pride in my experience, i take pride in my mistakes and learning form them, they wanna tell me all the headaches and learning curves i've gone threw are worth nothing? screw that.

wow. what the HELL is wrong with these schools doing crap like this!!!??!? isnt it up to the schools to explain exactly WHAT is involved with truck driving? unbelievable. whats next, the shifting course's are an extra thing? i swear in 15 years shifting a truck will be an endorsement and not something you're expected.

I heard of a school 2day that will do as little as 3hrs of driving and they have someone that works at the school issues the CDLs as soon as "they" think you're qualified...I think it's called NuWay?...

No the shifting classes aren't extra. The load company will not release any funds to the school unless I have both a CDL A AND a job for 30 days. They will provide more opportunities to practice shifting, but until I know who is interested in me and when, I am not ready to ask for the time.
