OK Peterbilt guys...Don't get butt hurt, But facts are facts!
I was chatting with a friend today and we started talking about PACCAR and it's trucks...I mentioned that Peterbilt was always a few steps behind Kenworth when it came to introducing product innovations to the market.
Here is one example...The "Walk in Sleeper"
In 1978 4 years after Kenworth introduced the first 60" walk in sleeper Peterbilt's engineers were tasked with making a bigger sleeper. They designed the 63" sleeper with rounded doors and a walk-through from the cab. The sleeper was introduced on a 1978 359-127" (pictured above) nicknamed "Big Mamoo" by the engineers, It could also be seen in the 1978 brochure "Best in Class." This truck also featured the first set of rectangular headlamps.(Not offered in production until 1983) The first raised roof (high cube) sleeper was on a 359 in 1986, 10 years after Kenworth introduced the first raised roof walk in sleeper in 1976.
As always...Peterbilt runs a distant second to the "real deal!"

Just in case anyone doubts these facts...Here's a 1976 Kenworth Bicentennial edition W900A with a 60"raised roof areodyne sleeper....
-
And here's a 1974 Kenworth W900A with the first factory 60 inch walk in sleeper....
The Challenger Thanks this. -
Well, thats because Peterbilt USE Kenworth's overly progressive customers to test new solutions on them, years BEFORE those (mostly dull) ideas are even considered to be offered to Peterbilt users. Thats Class...
-
That's funny!
You know of course that PACCAR has been the parent company of Kenworth since 1945 and didn't aquire Peterbilt intil 1958 thereby rendering Peterbilt the rank of "afterthought"
Even though all of the facts presented are documented truth...I'm just havin' a little fun with this thread and pokin' Peterbilt for laughs and the thread isn't intended to turn into a pissing contest...Rather just a little light hearted banter regarding the two brands that are considered the flagship PACCAR trucks. -
Seen this truck a few times. The owner' from my town. -
When I was the PR/publicity guy at the Iola Old Car Show in Wisconsin I had Paul Sagehorn's 'Sonny Pruitt' KW and his BJ and The Bear tucks in the show...
The SP truck you pictured is Sagehorn's and was actually used in the Movin' On show during the last season IIRC.... -
Question remains, who the PACCAR was back then? They were nobody before Peterbilt joined them (only to use KW as a highest quality test lab ever known in trucking history)
Gears Thanks this. -
You forgot this 1976 beauty. When the first one showed up at the local KW dealer, the cops had to be called out at night to keep all the lookers off of the trucks.
-
Yup KW and Pete are Kings of the 4 MPG trucks. Very impressive...
end of the road Thanks this.
