I drive a Kenworth T660. Friday night, i backed into a dock with a loaded trailer, was going to drop it, and hook to an MT. When i went to start my truck after lowering the landing gear and unhookin' the lines, i'd turn the key, and nothin'. Once the key went back to 'on', i never lost power. When i turned the key to start, i didn't hear no 'clicking' from the starter, etc. Just nothing happened. First service call, the guy tried to jumpstart me....but never got it to jump. it wasnt till i was pulled out from under a trailer in an attempt to get pull-started, but it wouldn't pop start. Wasnt till i reached down and turned the key again, then it started. Sounded more like an issue with the starter....but was curious what the vets thought??
The guys at the Kenworth dealership finally got me into the shop, and told me i had a bad battery....but wouldnt think it was an issue with the battery. dunno if i'm being taken for the perverbial 'ride' or not......suggestions??
First major issue with my truck....

sounds more like a solenoid
does it have the battery protection--where it keeps enough voltage to start truck by shedding unwanted loads? -
i agree prolly solenoid..
2 could be the ign switch
3. loose wire corrosion somewhere.. -
Battery cable to the starter. If you have NO power to the truck no where, id put money its just a loose battery cable to the starter.
-
thats just the thing...i've got plenty of power. before and after i try to start the truck. the guy who came out during the first service call who tried jumping me...also tried to bypass the solneoid, but didnt do anything. I'm hopin' the guys at the KW dealership find something else other than 'just a battery'. cause i know there is something else other than just a battery.....
thanx for the input guys.... -
Had the same thing happen to me!!!
Open the battery cover and check the fuse in the electrical coupling that connects the two sets of batteries.
Good luck!!!! -
seee an old truck wouldnt do that
-
im betting the ignition switch, also their usually is more than one solinoid one close to the starter and one up closer to the ignition switch
-
solenoid.
The fact that the tow truck driver tried to bypass the electrical harness and to hot wire the solenoid proved the solenoid didnt want to fire. It is no biggie to replace, and solenoids do go bad with time.
Disconnect one side of the batteries.
remove wires and remember where they go on the solenoid.
remove old solenoid
insert new solenoid
re-attach wiring
re-attach batteries
reset your clocks inside truck and your golden. its about a half hour job to do on your own and can easily be done in the parking lot of the parts supplier.
Personally? I would pull that whole starter and have it rebuilt. Generally if the solenoid goes, its a good time to get the rest of the starter taken care of, just good maintenance. Brushes, bearings, starter clutch, solenoid, and your good for another 2 years or so. -
