I've been OTR now for about 6 weeks, At first my DM and i were working good together. Lately he has been giving me crap miles and leaving me to sit in Laredo,TX for 2-3 days a week.
I've tried being civil about this, what it my best step towards getting the miles i need?![]()
My DM doesn't take me seriously.

if that don't help then talk to your production mgr. if that don't work and you are doing all you can to be productive....then ask for a different dm -
Option One;
Explain to DM you are not the new parking lot security attendant in Laredo.
Option Two;
Ask politely for more miles. Then give it a couple of weeks. After that, jump down his ### with both feet. -
Are you solo or team????

First never take a load that goes to Laredo. Laredo is run independent of SLC and you are at the mercy of thier process .. which is basically manana.
Second not getting loads or getting short loads with twice as much time as you need to finish them. Talk to your DMs supervisor. If that doesn't work, tell them you need a load to SLC or BH so you can turn in your truck. DMs get fired if too many of thier drivers quit. Use the threat that you will quit and they will work harder to get you loads ... problem is you have to threaten them about every other day. -
I have never had to threaten to quit, but i did have to get a new dm once. the dm I had was when my brother and I were in the q fleet. we had him for a while then he was promoted to production mgr. my next dm was umm...a little challenged. he did not communicate as much as i thought he should. (i was used to getting a reply to a msg in 5-10 minutes maybe an hour if he was on lunch, not all day later right before he goes home for the day)
I asked what i could do to get more miles and I was told the freight was slow...I msged my old dm who was his boss and said i need a different dm, he called me the next business day asked how i was doing and what was going on and I told him. I explained how my year to date avg miles have dropped and he wasn't communicating with me in a timely manner. so my old dm said let he was assigning new dm's to new drivers and he will see who he can come up with for me. my new dm has been keeping me hopping. and says I'm one of the best trucks in his fleet.
so I speak from exp on this one.
also I hate to say it but if you talk to your dm's supervisor and he says he can't get you a new dm....it's because you are not doing what your supposed to do, (on time del's, not running out of hours on a load)
in the 3 years I have been driving I have never had a late load that was driver error. I always try to pu early, run ahead, and try to del early. the only thing i need a dm for is to swap/ drop loads and get with the planner about a reload.
the planner gives out freight not the dm, the fleet gets miles based on on time delivery. the dm's job is to make sure the loads are running on time. and to work swaps if necessary. if your running ahead the dm msg's the planner and asks about a drop and reload to keep you moveing. -
Threatening to quit..............
That'll work !!!!! -
I took the option to explain im not a parking lot attendant. I sounded extremly serious and wasnt backing down. Then,i got swapped so i didn't have to go to Laredo. Thank y'all for the advice. I think my DM was taking advantage of the fact most new drivers don't realize you don't have to take BS.
walstib Thanks this. -
