out of boredom i'm looking up truck prices and such, and there is some real nice deals out for day cab trucks. i've been thinking about if this would be even feasible. lets say i'd be able to buy a used truck and make the payments on it with out moving it, meaning i keep my current job, and buy a truck, and on my 2 days off, possibly get more days off, and go out on day trips threw out my region. (go threw a broker i suppose since i dont know the first thing about getting contracts). i wonder if this might be a slow but financially smart way to get my own truck company started, so i dont have to rely on the truck making money to make the payments, then any money i make with the truck reinvest it, save up for a new one, whatever.

i guess some of my questions might be is it even possible to only run 2 days a week? what are some ball park figures i might be able to expect to see? from what i gather it looks like i could expect to see around 1k (please correct me if i'm wrong) for a day trip load. i guess i'd have to get a hotel wherever i'm at, then bring a load back up to where i live. i know, easier said then done, being O/O is a huge risk, etc etc, but i dont want to break out as a full blown O/O, i dont want to go OTR for a company. i'm very much content with the company i'm at now and want to slowly get into trucking and do it with my own truck, i dont want to be forced to run if i dont want to. anyway just some thoughts on what i might do in the future and curious what some of you O/O's think.

The problem is your days off are not going to coincide with the days where you have a load for your own truck.

Unless you have some way of making your own loads. For example, sometimes scrap yards need someone to go out and pick up metal, haul scrap machinery in, or clean out a warehouse. Or maybe you could hook up with a small manufacturer or distributer of some product where you can set up a route and make multi stop deliveries.

    What area are you in?

Sounds like a bad idea. That truck is going to be sitting around most of the time, continually depreciating.

The cost of payments (interest), insurance, maintenance, etc.

If you aren't going to run it full-time, forget it.

I have a day cab and run local. IMO an O/O is not a part time job for that matter its not even a job! It is a way of life dont see how it could be done part time. It would be rare to find something that only needs done when you can do it. Its also unlikley that you could just jump into it with out some experiance. You need 2 years driving before you can get insurance you can afford. Without family in trucking or experiance driving chances of success are slim to none. Lots of negative feed back but thats the way it is. I dont think you should give up on your dream but change the direction your going to use to get there. There is no short cut or easy path.

    It's worth the trip.

i'm in massachusetts... i'm gonna kind of respond to all your posts.... i know it sounds weird, and very unconventional, but my thought process is if i can pay for a truck with the income from my current job i'm not up against the wall with a truck payment and no loads, no income. the way i see it, if i can get a truck for 30k (which from what i'm seeing its more the doable), the payments on it aren't going to be much, somewhere in the 700$ range per month, plus insurance (Maybe someone can school me on that?). lets just say for example i buy a truck, i run it once a week and make 4 or 500 profit a day. that's another 2 grand a month on top of what i already make, i'd be able to pay the truck off in no time, and then be in a much better spot to go out on my own full time. if i have my own truck, i'm not leased with a company, i can get in touch with brokers and find a load for the day i'd run.

one more point it's gonna be a few years till i even decide on anything, i have to rebuild my credit, the downturn in the economy ruined me and i had to file bankruptcy. i managed to keep my house thank god. this whole thread was just kind of a "could this be done?" and i personally am not seeing how it couldnt be done, is it the regular way to start a truck business hell no but again if i can pay for it with out it moving, then i can start things slow and such....

It'll probably cost around $700 to $1000 per month just for insurance and plates.

I'm surprised noone mentioned authority. You have to run under yours or somebody elses.
