On a 10 speed, when I drive I usually will start out in 2nd gear (unless I bobtail, then it's third) and when I stop, I usually find myself going slow enough I'll stop it in 6th, completely skipping the low range. Is this pretty much what everyone else does or am I screwing things up royally?
What gear do you start/stop in?

it depends on what your weight is, but usually you can start in 2nd or 3rd, and sometimes in 4th if you are empty or bobtailing.
But, when you stop you should be in a control gear which is 5th or below. -
Pretty much what lots of us do with a light load or bobtail.
Might as well skip a few gears on the way up too, if you can. Saves on fuel and W&T. -
How do you skip gears on the way up? When going down, I will normally go from 10 to 8 to 6 or 7 to 6. I usually am not loaded heavy...
-
Same way you skip them going down the speeds, in reverse.
You just let the RPM's _drop_ more, and slip it into the proper gear. Of course, I am speaking about a ten speed with a light-weight or no load.
It all depends really on how many speeds you have to work with, how powerful your engine is, and how much weight you need to pull, without lugging the engine.
You will get the hang of it, just like you did downshifting and skipping gears.
Trust me on this..

I start in whatever gear will get me moving and stress the drivetrain the least. Skip after you are going, getting going is the hardest part. All depends on weight, uphill, downhill, road conditions. You get the idea.

4 years experience, and ask how to skip gears upshifting.
I am not degrading you, but I must ask..........................
Do you always use every gear when upshifting ??
If you start out, and are going downhill, it is almost necesssary to skip a gear or two.
Would you go in detail........thanks.papa1953 Thanks this. -
Well, umm... Yes... You can always learn something new. To be fair though, I can go through those gears pretty quick. If all those other guys at the lights are skipping gears going up, that means I'm going through the gears twice as fast. I usually will out accelerate pretty much anyone.
elamigowapo and 123456 Thank this. -
Do they really teach this stuff in school? I'm being serious.

So you are saying you are "drag racing" off the line just to be in front? Try not being in such a rush...flooring the accelerator does nothing more than dropping your MPG's...they put those gears in for a reason...to get from one to the next smoother is the key!
You're rushing to get to the next red light first? Teenager 4 wheeler mentality!
