Lets say John Doe gets a old Army truck 2.5Ton. This truck has air breaks so a Class A or B would be able to drive it being it either weight class.
Now Jim Doe gets a old KW W900L and fixes it up, But removes the 5Th Wheel and put a bigger sleeper.

I Know they would have to have Class A/B License to drive them.. Do They need a Health card, Have long book. I Mean they will be more of a POV and not move commerce.

get the trucks registered as "campers" and at one time, no need for anything more than the Class A.....(or) B license.......BUT.....

however, with the new DOT regulations, we NEED a health card to keep our CDL.........the health card will be entered into the system and every time we go to renew our license, we will need a new health card or the DMV will "down grade" our CDL.......downgrade i believe to a ordinary car license......

so that answers that.....YES, you WILL NEED a health card......but NO log book........

The class of license depends on weight and if it is a combination.

This is from a state license dept. Going by this you may be ok with a class C if it is less than 26,000 lbs. Which is a normal car drivers license.
If it weighs more you will need a class B, but you can get a class B non-commercial. Which would cover it and not be a CDL.

    Class B
Single vehicles weighing 26,001 or more pounds; may tow a trailing unit of less than 10,000 pounds; and motor vehicles included within Class C. Applicants must possess a Class C license prior to obtaining a Class B license and be at least 18 years of age.
    Class C
Any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating not in excess of 26,000 pounds, any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating not in excess of 10,000 pounds, any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating in excess of 10,000 pounds, provided that the combination of vehicles has a gross combined vehicle weight rating not in excess of 26,000 pounds, and any self-propelled or towed vehicle that is equipped to serve as temporary living quarters for recreational, camping, or travel purposes and is used solely as a family or personal conveyance.

I thought it goes by the GVWR of the vehicle. So a W900 turned into a camper or whatever would still require a class A.

if your going to turn the KW into a camper, check with your local DMV on that, but I don't think you have to have a special lic for a recreational vehicle, but you have to get it reclassified and put private-not for hire on the side.

UMMM I think there is some confussion here...... If it is listed as a camper... and converted to that use and is NOT FOR HIRE as stated.... NO CDL IS REQUIRED. Most all larger motor homes have air brakes and weigh in excess of 10,001 pounds with a GVWR of more than 12,000 pounds and they do not need a CDL to operate these units.

    mysticguido Thanks this.

You will need to go to your State's authorities that register vehicles. Explain that to them. Some State's require if the "motor home" is over 26,000 lbs gross vehicle weight rating that they have the proper class license, for instance if the motor home is 33,000 lbs, some State's require a non commercial class B license to operate. Their is a ton of confussion from the general public with this topic. I get asked all the time by folks. Each State is so different, you are just asking for bad information that may get you in trouble.

I will also imagine that you may be stopped by a CMV inspector from time to time and will have to explain this as well. Let them see the 5th plate is gone and whatever paperwork you get from the DMV about reclassification of the vehicle, would keep a copy of it in the vehicle with you as well.
