Here's the scoop.... at 55 years of age I find myself unemployed!! Had my own business doing architectural drafting for six years and ran out of work in the first part of 2009. Yep.... that sucked! Got a offer to join one of my clients staff as a project manager down in St. Pete/Tampa area and took it with hopes that the wife was going to find work and we'd relocate to the area.
You guessed it.... a year later the house hasn't sold, she's applied at twenty or so hospitals (she's a registered nurse and in middle management) and either over-qualified or under-qualified for the positions she's applied for.
So after a year away from home I decide it's time to make a move.... Heck, if I'm going to be away from home at least I should look to cut my expenses and see the rest of the U.S. out a winshield in the process. Besides, it costs a sh!+ load to try and live in two places at once!!!!
Anyway, I'll get to the point here.... Always wanted to be a trucker, can't find a job here in NW Florida at 55 years old in my profession, and figured it's time for a new career path. So that makes me a "wannabe" and I figured this is a great place to get the "real" inside scoop! I've been looking around about schooling and what companies have to offer and hope I'll get some good advice here!
So let me get started with my first question.... as a regional company driver is it realistic to expect to be home every seven to ten days or so? I figure the first year that won't be possible.... but in the long term a workable situation!?
Thanks for the "ear" and look forward to being a part of the trucking community! Hope this hasn't bored you to death!![]()

Thanks for the welcome MassHole.... pardon, but that's a heck of a screen name!? Is that a reference to Massachusetts being a great place to live?

dont feel bad bud there are some of us out here that have engineering degrees and management degrees like my wife and myself as well the last few years have been horrible for sure... i have always driven truck though when i lived in phx i drove part time for swift to get outta the house on weekends back in the day but that turned into a full time job again a few years ago.. i love driving just not the income...
hope to see ya out here on the road soon -
Thanks for the reply Orion.... I'm not too worried about the change in income. We just finished putting our son through college. That's one less expense we've got to worry about. So now it's just the wife and me at home. Besides, at our ages we've come pretty dang far! As far as a new career path and basically starting over.... I've always enjoyed a challenge and tried to make everything an adventure!
Heck, just ask my wife..... she'll tell how much of an adventure it's been being around someone so mentally challenged!!!
BTW.... great pic at the bottom of your posts!orion3814 Thanks this. -
welcome to the forum strat57......you have to be a musician with that handle...but I digress.......running regional or dedicated does get you home more frequently...but most of the good companies won't put a new guy out there on them. Now of course Werner and some of the other starter companies will but you may or my not like working for them or some of the others.
yes you will have to pay some dues with a larger company to get started but every person has different needs and expectations with a company. Make sure you look at as many sides of a company before signing on with them. Good luck ...be safe and have funstrat57 Thanks this. -
Ya I guess you could say that lol. Its more of a way to call people from massachusetts an ###h*le but in a Better way

Oh my - this part could apply to my husband and myself!! He is a mechanical designer and I'm a nurse... he is the one that lost his employment - I'm still working (at least for now). We have been trying to get a 'loan modification' for almost a year and finally gave up. So we are becoming a team - but in steps. He will go first and get trained and hooked up with insurance, then I can leave my job and get trained. I just hope we are both accepted and that I will be able to drive (well going forward I will be able to do - backing up will be the challenge!!) and pass all the tests
So we are moving out - daughter and husband are moving in and we are all sharing the cost of the mortgage... they are keeping a 'room' open for us when we decide to visit...
strat57 Thanks this.
