Just a quick apology to the truckers I haver ran into on the road. My trainer does not allow me to flash lights, or signal in any way. I'm not ingoring you, and I appreciate your help on the road.
I have 40 hours left, and I'll be in my own truck, then no more crazy theories, that I have to live by.

Can you tell us what company it is or give us a hint? It's a shame you do not get the training you deserve. What is his reason for not giving another truck the clearance signal? And how many years does this guy have on the road?
This just proves there needs to be something done. I have written my representatives on my ideas on making another endorsement on the CDL for driver trainer and requiring manadated rules the trainer and the company must follow. Then add that to a company inspection done by the DOT. Doesn't allow you to signal in any way? Are you serious? If you only have 40 hours left, then just bite your tounge and ride it out. But I would have demanded another trainer long ago.rocknroll nik Thanks this.

Isn't the customary "flashing of the lights" to give clearance just a polite gesture anyway? When I move back over after passing someone, I'm going to rely on my judgment solely. I've seen guys flash me back over, and if I'd taken it, they would be tailgating me. I may be missing something, but I don't understand why it's a problem for a trainer to not teach, or not allow this behavior.

frankly i wouldn't sweat it at all. there ARE drivers (with MANY YEARS EXPERIENCE) out there now that DO NOT flash lights, so don't worry about it. and it ain't got NOTHING TO DO with trainers.

Company policy at a lot of places. Frowned upon at many others.
Reason: If you "flash" somebody over, they take your cue and &#%$ it up, you can be held partly responsible. Companies don't want the liability.
In other words, you can thank the insurance companies for this.

I agree, it is simply a polite gesture. I wouldn't totally rely on it neither. Nor is it growns for dismissing a trainer. Maybe there are valid reasons for not using this as a communication method. I would actually like to know the reason why this is not suggested to do.

a "couple" of reasons.
1) you "could be" signaling it is ok to pass and if there IS an accident, YOU WOULD BE HELD LIABLE.
2) if and i say IF a cop is nearby and see's the lights flashing, he CAN pull you over and write you up a "defective lights" ticket...as the officer see's that there is a problem.
as Injun said, there ARE company policies forbidding flashing of the lights. be they headlights or tail lights, or clearance lights.
in fact, just ask YOUR trucking company THEIR POLICY on this subject. that should pretty much END any further conversations regarding the flashing of lights.scottied67 and Injun Thank this. -
I re-read your post and believe that you actually mean that not allowing you to signal in any way, you were referring to when another truck passes you. I thought you meant by using your turn signal in general. My bad.
