Transport Topics (4/16/07) published an article by Frederick Kiel titled: "Trucking Bankruptcies Increase As Freight Volumes Decline." A quote from transportation analyst Donald Broughton caught my attention. He said, "My view of the national labor market is far weaker than current unemployment suggests. I speak to many truck driving schools, and they're telling me that they have the largest classes they've had in the past five or six years, and they have more students backed up on waiting lists than ever. There are fewer jobs available out there."

I would agree with that. Freight is seen by many financial firms, such as Morgan Stanley, as an indicator for the economy. If the economy is weak no one buys as much, and freight softens. When this happens unemployment goes up and theres always a job in trucking. The problem is that it is a vicious cycle. Freight is weak so the economy is weak. This creates more truck drivers looking for work.... but the freight isn't there because the economy is weak. Then when the economy is good again there are other jobs that these new drivers will take and the pool of new drivers dries up, just as the freight gets there! I'm sure recruiters love it when the economy goes down hill!
