Hey guys im in my 3rd week of Roadmasters in San Antonio, Tx. The job placement lady has given me 2 applications to Covenant and Crst, they are both team driving positions. I dont really know alot about team driving, could someone fill me in?

I really want to solo drive. The job placement lady is telling me since i rear ended someone i cant get a job as a solo driver. Now heres the catch, yes i did rear end someone but there was no ticket or accident report. I went to the police station and the only thing they have on it is a Call of service. I havent mentioned this to the lady yet im hoping it will be fine and she can put me in a solo driving postion. Anyone know?

One more thing, I had speeding ticket in May that i couldnt take defensive driving on so its on my record are speeding tickets a big deal when getting hired? A few guys at roadmasters have had felonies and what not and they are getting hired on so im not to sure what to think. The job placement lady is making it sound like they will really hold me back.

    Sorry for all the questions.

If I could start over, I would not have gone to the career counselor at my cdl school. The school kept pushing Werner and Swift on all of the students making it sound like that those two companies were the only ones in this country that hired cdl school graduates. The woman that handles applications at your school....is there someone else that you can get to assist you with submitting pre-hire applications to other companies? This website alone seems to give some great advice as far as information regarding other truck companies. I don't want to sound like a lousy recruiter, but I've read that ConWay is a decent company that hires students. You have many choices. Don't be forced to drive "team" just because of one woman's assumptions about your driving abilities.

    Speeding Ticket

As long as that is your only citation, you still have a chance of getting hired somewhere. Just be truthful on your app because there is a chance that it will still show up on your record.

I don't think there's anything barring you from applying at companies on your own - some may or may not take you with different things on your record (tons of threads on this) but you can definitely try without trusting the school lady to tell you whether or not you will get a position doing X.

I don't think one speeding ticket will be a huge issue but the only opinion that matters is the person that does the hiring at whatever company you apply for. Generally more serious accidents and whatnot would be big black marks.

Team driving is just that - you and some other random person (OK maybe not random, you might get some minimal input) driving around together. Personally I couldn't do it. Being with my trainer for 4 weeks was enough, the truck gets awful small, and he was a totally clean and decent guy too. I couldn't imagine getting stuck with someone with really terrible hygiene/habits/attitude, or anything else that might get on your nerves after awhile.

One company I would suggest taking a look at would be Squire/Knight - I know they're in Indy and SoCal but some random person told me they were starting one in TX somewhere - that could be totally wrong, but still worth a look. I'm sure a lot of people will complain about Knight (same with every company) but I think the program was top-notch. They take students with a CDL and 120 hours of schooling from an "accredited" school ("licensed" is I think more the correct term). I have no idea about their ticket/accident/citation policy.

screw the placement lady! its your career right? you want to drive solo?

Then fill out your own applications!:biggrin_2556:

Have an accident on your record doesnt NOT mean you can only team thats just stupid, shes going to screw you both of those companies suck anyway. Do some looking around the forum and fill out applications to companys that sound like they have what you want...

Well im under the impression that Werner and swift are the only companies that will take young guys right out of school. Atleast thats what the school is making it sound like. They push Werner very hard at San Antonio, they make it sound like its the only job and the best job in trucking. I know thats not true, my father has been a trucker for 10+ yrs but unfortunately he lives in Chicago. I was just under the impression alot of trucking companies wont hire on students besides Werner, Swift, etc. Im 21 as well so my options are limited from what i been told.

But please tell me some companies that i can get into with being 21 and just coming out of trucking school. I def. dont wanna team drive, like you said the space gets SMALL. I cant handle that, but if i have to i guess ill suck it up.

    I'm 21 too...

thats only going to take a few options off of the table for you, a majority of the companies that hire new drivers hire at 21, theres maybe 6 I can think of off the top of my head that require you be older then 21.

    Watkins Shepard
    May Trucking
    Gordon
    Prime
    Schnider
    Central Refrigerated
    plenty more...

Here is a link to get you started. It lists several companies in each state, in alphabetical order.

    Trucking Companies - Wisconsin

I have Wis. highlighted as that's where i live. So don't be fooled, it was just what interested me. Click on the link to your state, it will give many of the trucking companies found there, though I'm sure not all.
