Semi-truck runs over crash victim

A Callahan man died Wednesday when he crashed on U.S. 1 in Nassau County and was run over by another vehicle after being thrown from his car, authorities said.
John E. Ryder, 30, was going south on U.S. 1 near Bourdeau Lane about 5:20 p.m. when he drove onto the median and lost control of his Ford Escort.

Ryder's car went onto a grass shoulder and struck a tree, throwing him and passenger Matthew W. Boyer, 24, of Ilion, N.Y., onto the road, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. A passing tractor-trailer truck tried to swerve to avoid hitting the two men, but the trailer ran over Ryder, according to the Highway Patrol.

Boyer was taken to Shands Jacksonville hospital in serious condition.
The driver of the truck, Carlis Summer, 54, was not injured.
