Are there any Car carrier 0/0 here. Others with info about the Car hauling business can chime in too.

Info needed operational startup costs, all/any info from trucks/trailers you drive and why?
what region you prefer to work and so on.

As a new driver should i be even thinking this route?

    how is it money wise?

    Thanks

A 10 car carrier (otr) will cost you big bucks brand new. A small 3 car carrier being pulled by a dually P/U is a lot less. Consider brand new VS used also.

Your gonna need a dispatcher if you go with anything over a three or four car. Unless you want to spend all day on central trying to fill up your truck every other day or so.

Most brokers dont want you holding onto their cars for a week. For instance if you call on a monday morning thinking your gonna get a weeks worth of work it is more than likely not going to happen, they will tell you they want to get it moved sooner and to call back when you can pick it up. A day ahead wont be a problem but your not going to call them on monday and say you can pick it up thursday.

It takes alot of time browsing central and other sites looking for good cars. I have read that the prices have dropped alot on cars compared to what it was but honestly if you are happy making what it pays now then the prices are ok.

As for the area, you go where the cars are. :biggrin_25525: Anywhere there is a port there will be cars going there, so you will want to get a twic card. The areas that cars orginate in change alot. Cars coming out of one area one week and then nothing.

Alot of people do it with 3 car wedges which is ok if you are starting out, we have a guy here that hauls them with a rollback and a two car bumper pull trailer, but I would suggest going big, well semi big, time. Motels are expensive. That said I would look into a regular sleeper truck with a 7 car trailer. I wouldn't buy a 10 car for the simple fact of it being a unitasker. But thats just me.

Also would think about buying a couple other trailers. Maybe a reefer and a flatbed or something. If cars get slow you already have the truck that you can use to haul other freight. See? multitasking.

Your not going to get rich but you can make some money. Also learning to speak about 15 languages because your not likely to speak to anyone that talks good english, would help.

Car hauler is a good way to go broke. Quick like too.

There are a couple of us still carrying the scars.

Fish why didn't you put on the sales pitch instead of talking him out of it?
    You sell finally?

No, I still have it,..................It make for good collateral for the loan that payed of the rest of my debt from my car haul debacle,...Now all I have to do is pay off the loan and I can sell it then,....

Besides for some reason my conscience wont let me sell it to a newbie sucker that is bound to fail,...........I would not feel right about that,...

The car hauler business is in the toilet, along with dump trucking.

Few are buying cars and almost no construction going on.

Guys that was all good information, exactly what i needed to hear, reason being it was looking to good to be true.

Being from Baltimore, MD, a big port where i see endless new car lots both leaving and coming into the country. And I see companies like Fleet car carriers, BAV and many others and some independent too rolling alot, but that was all visual info i can get until i came to talk to one of the Independent Contractor / his own 10 car carrier with Fleet car carriers say that he used to Gross 300K/year and since its slow he still makes 250K.... This was later confirmed by a second Trucker with the same config. (Are these truckers serious) ??????

Now considering that a used 10 car carrier with a decent truck can be bought for 60-70K. or even less.. It sure looks tempting doesnt it.

I know for starters this is probably not the way to go, I will be playing safe and hauling freight.
