According to Transport Topics (4/9/07), the Minnesota (USA) state Senate has approved a bill that would prohibit smoking in places of employment including truck cabs with more than one operator present. The House version of the bill contains a provision that would allow truck drivers to designate a "significant individual" with whom they could share a cab and still smoke. Trucking companies would have to remove "smoking equipment" including ashtrays or lighters. Employers also would have to post no-smoking signs in affected trucks.

MInnesota's proposed smoking ban is similar to legislation that went into effect in Ohio in December (Transport Topics 12-11, p. 29). The Ohio ban originally prohibited solo drivers from smoking in their cabs, but the state trucking association successfully lobbied for amendments exempting trucks with only one driver.

I don't smoke, would never team driver with a smoker.

    But, this is ridiculous.

I quit my 15 years of smoking about 6 months ago but I don't care what you do in your own truck. Or even in the truck stop buildings. If I don't like it I'll leave. Just don't smoke in my cab. I don't think thats too much to ask.

That is really stupid. What if you use the ashtray to keep change in?

I can appreciate that. Your cab is your home. I am a smoker, but if in a non smoker's home, I do not light up out of respect.

At the same time, if I am in my home, I will do what I want. Remove the ashtrays and lighters, no problem, can buy either.

We wouldn't need these silly laws if we, as a society, just used courtesy and common sense.

I have never smoked a cigarette in my life, but I use both my ashtray and cigarette lighter socket in my vehicle... and would not be happy if they were not there.
