Legless man struck, killed by mail truck

SAN FRANCISCO -- A legless transient man who was known for navigating the city on a skateboard was killed today when he was struck by a U.S. Postal Service semi truck at Townsend and Third streets, police said.

The man was immediately killed in the 12:44 p.m. accident, said police Inspector Matt Krimsky. The man's identity has not been released, but Krimsky said he was known in the area and often got around on his skateboard.
Krimsky said the truck driver was heading north on Third Street and making a right turn on a green light onto Townsend when he struck the man, who was in the crosswalk. Krimsky said he didn't know which way the man was headed.
The driver stopped at the scene. Jim Widgel, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, said postal inspectors are working with San Francisco police on the investigation.
He did not know where the driver was headed, or whether he had been taken off driving status while the investigation continues.
"It all depends on the situation. I haven't heard if the driver had been relieved," he said. "It's sad when these things happen."
Joseph Kim, who owns a cafe and convenient store called Liquor and More on the corner, said he had known the victim for many years. He often would panhandle in the area during baseball games, Kim said. "He's a very nice guy ... a drinker, but a very nice guy. It's sad," Kim said, adding that the man was difficult to see because he was so low to the ground.
