Buying a Car Hauler

well, the most cars you can haul is 11. I guess you need to know what you are hauling primarily. I'm not totally knowledgeable about transport rigs, but I think if you mainly haul pickups then a particular setup would be better since you can't haul 11 of them. Seems all the big outfits buy the 11 car rigs, but if you want to stay under the heavy use tax weight limit you can run something smaller which would get better fuel mileage too. It all depends on what your loads consist of.

 

to stay under heavy highway tax you're talking about 4 cars. the big boys have 10 car haulers not 11. even then you gotta have a pretty nice load to get all 10 on. ocaasionally you can get 11.

 

It's been quite a few years since I pulled one, but as I recall our worst enemy, especially on older trailers was rust. With all that steel tubing, they had a tendency to rust from the inside out. Water gets inside the tubing, settles in the low spots and if the little weep holes get plugged, the water sits there and eats it up.

I would look for a trailer that lived most of its life in the south if possible. I would also check all the welds carefully for evidence of rust and/or rusty water draining out of and down the frame.

And I would either invest in a good lock box to store your chains in, or I would make sure they are welded to the rollers - they will disappear in a hurry if they are easy to take.

 

work? I think that sector of the industry is blighted. Lots of empty truck sitting around..... Probably buy one real cheap!

 

I be looking for a better business environment before I bought one... I know a guy who's down to one truck from 5 three years ago... and he can't make enough right now to really justify driving one himself.
