I have a 04 Volvo 780 with an ISX in it...It plugs the fuel filter on the engine (drivers side on block)...Was talking with a fuel distributor and he was saying that the ISX gets the fuel so hot that it starts to break down and asphtaine(SP) seperates out and plugs the filter...Its a black scum that is in the filter...Its not stopped by the Davco filter but leaves that filter black also...I change the filter about every 12000 miles and the truck keeps running good....Well as good as an ISX can...

if you have black scum in your filters it is from microbes or algae growth and you need to get some serious treatment run thru your tanks to kill it.

No, Hardlyevr, that is not always true anymore. I had this same problem with my ISX and after doing the biocide game for a while and not getting anywhere, I attacked the problem with products that reduce the asphaltine problem. I succeeded then. It has the same characteristics as algae in the filters but the ISX really cooks the fuel that it returns to the tanks and asphaltine is the bigger problem with ULSD.

I used a product called PRI-D which can normally be found at boating marine outlets. that product greatly reduced the asphaltine problem. Still get it off and on, but it is now more controlled.
