Keene gets involved in hazmat enforcement dispute

Chico Assemblyman Rick Keene defended his efforts to referee an ongoing dispute between the California Highway Patrol and members of the commercial trucking industry over hazardous material enforcement.

Keene has twice set up meetings the last one occurring in his capitol office building in Sacramento last Friday to discuss the appropriate response by law enforcement when trucks transporting chemicals or gasoline products are pulled over for suspected leaks or other problems.
The Chico assemblyman told the Enterprise-Record that some drivers questioned the necessity for calling out a full hazmat team to investigate "a small leak or to collect evidence,'' since the cost of doing so is often borne by the trucking firms themselves. Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey regards such hazmat enforcement as a public safety issue, and finds it "very unusual" that Keene would "intercede on behalf of the truckers,'' when the local assemblyman does not sit on any committees involving transportation.
