Ok... my hubby is a new OTR driver and I am signed up to go to Sage in Jan. 2011. I am looking for information on what might best fit our circumstances. My husband needs to remain OTR while his company pays their half of his school loan but mine will be paid in full through a program I am signed up with - as long as I can come up with one more letter of intent to hire. That shouldn't be a problem. I will need to find something local as I need to be home every night due to the fact that we have animals that need care.
Does anybody have any suggestions for which companies offer the best pay AND employee - not benefits - we don't need those - but I want a company that isn't going to take advantage of me - like the company my hubby works for "APPEARS" to be doing. Being new, we are not sure if that is the actual case or if it's an "across the board" kind of thing with all companies, but in short - he's not making a whole lot of money and sits a lot (and often).
I am thinking only of vans. I do not want to have to tie down or anything like that - I'm no spring chicken. OR, would I be better off say driving a dump truck??? I'm just looking for ideas and advice. Thanks in advance.
Hi! Looking for info

Welcome. I think it will be hard for a new driver to find a home every night gig, of course that can vary depending on where you live maybe. Most jobs like that are what everyone wants and experienced drivers with a good employment history will most often get the nod. Good luck.

Oh... well, thanks for the heads up then!!! Wow... I hope I get really lucky!

So, I have another question: Can a "dedicated" run get you home every night??? I might actually like that better.... or would it depend on the company you work for?
-
"Regional" or "dedicated" won't get you home every night. I suggest visiting your nearest "Waste Management" office, and see what they can offer you. Yeah its a tuff and dirty job, but it does pay off, has you home everyday, and if you get in and stay with it, you might not need to look for another job ever again. Just my two cents......

you could go OTR with your husband and get you a house/ animal sitter.

Ok... Thanks Lee.. I will have to look in the towns around us because we don't have waste pick up here (Adirondack park).
Musicmaker - a house/pet sitter is not an option - my husband is a retired police office and has some expensive guns and such around the house. I have "some" jewelry that I bought when I was single and a diamond consultant (50% discount) and neither of us would be comfortable with a stranger in the house. I should probably sell the jewelry...... I never wear it anymore. There's really not much at all. Anyway, the animals are our babies and 2 have health problems - one needs fluids every other day for renal failure and the other needs to be pilled twice a day.... special foods and that kind of stuff.... it's just easier for me to do it. I also have a part time position with the town (elected) that requires me to be here on the weekends. -
