was wandering if anyone had any solutions for my poor mpg. have an 06 century 14L detroit 455hp 3.70 rears. getting 4mpg at best and thats running 65. doesnt do much worse at 70 maybe a point but doesnt do any better at 60. doing all the things i know to do progressive shifting, lp 22s, air pressure. just out of ideas. been to the detroit shop a couple of times.all those guys do is change parts and spend my money for no results. thanks in advance![]()

How are you calculating the mileage? Do not use the dash computer, they will count in idle time. If your idle time is excessive that will effect your mileage. What is your idle or PTO percentage? When was the last time you did a top end set?

just got rid of my '04 star had 14L 500 n it was one of the 1st egr motors ...egr robed the power and fuel milage ...they say the ones later with the dpf were better ans now the scr motors even better but i just got new star with 560 1850 torque scr and it is same as the 04 and truth is the dan thing doesnt pull a dimes worth better.next truck will have to look into getting a differen motor i guess
dbag Thanks this. -
i calculate it tank to tank manually. i run the same route everyday so its pretty easy to do. just had detroit do a tune up. i idle some but not excessive. i will have to check the% of that.

ive got an 03 fld with the 12.7 set up just like the 06. it will get 5.5 all the time. i can live with that but 4 makes it hard. i agree i think it something to do with the egr.

12.7 ltr motors are better on fuel then the 14ltr.
What rpm are you at when driving 65mph?
You should be around 1300-1500 anything over or under will give you bad fuel mileage.dbag Thanks this. -
Same set-up, pulling 40k+ loads, lower 48. I was getting 7's - but not at 65mph. That would work out into the 5's somewhere. 3.70's are great for around 58 mph, but you have to be light on the throttle, not much idling, pay attention to trailer weight distribution.
So, if EGR is killing your mileage, you've got a ton of black smoke coming out of the stack, yes?dbag Thanks this. -
somewhere around 14 to 1500.
