That joker hoedown is on every boyd thread sayin samething. Apparently he sucked at Flatbedding. Boyd isn't that bad. Actually most of the fleet managers r Christians n happily married. They don't treat u like ur stupid n great pros to talk too. I currently work n train for boyd so if anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

I've worked for Boyd for 7 years now. This is the longest I've ever worked in one place. They are sometimes lax about setting up appointments, but aside from that cropping up a couple times a year, I haven't had any issues. They haven't annoyed me enough to make me quit yet. If a cherry home-every-night job showed up I'd take it, but I see no reason to get in anyone else's OTR truck.

Boyd is a flatbed company leaning towards shorter and shorter runs, which means more and more work for the same/less amount of $. 95% of all loads are tarped ($18/tarp). And I don't speak trivial amount of additional work, on some weeks you will work way more than Chinese sweatshop labor, you'd have no time for showers, food, sleep, just secure, drive 61mph truck, play with a logbook, pass out, wake up and do it all over. Some weeks are better, some weeks are hell. But if you want to get home frequently and make more than peanuts, that means lots of work on short runs + some luck on Fridays. Of course, if you are OK with $500/week and home every other week, they wouldn't push you or say you a word. If you don't screw up/hurt yourself, they are decent people to work for, especially if you'll get a good dispatcher. On the other hand, the only way for one to judge the decency of a company is to screw up/get hurt, and I've heard less than encouraging rumors in that department. Health insurance is fairly crappy, but you'll wait only for 1 month to get one.

It's not about Boyd "personally", but it's about flat-bedding in general, if you want the least amount of pay for the most amount of work/risk - go flat-bedding. It's seriously underpaid and with new CSA 2010, flat-bedding is just a ticking bomb under your CDL, one grumpy DOT inspector, 5 "frayed" straps and good luck finding decent work. Add securement/unsecuring to wait for load/unload and you have no time left to shower/eat & sleep, especially if you have "short load" week. Keep in mind that most of flat-bed shippers/receivers are not open for business on Saturdays & Sundays.

Sure, flat-bedders make an extra cent or two per mile, but it just doesn't cover the trouble and $ lost on waiting&securing, not speaking of much greater risk to get hurt, to get in an accident, to rake up points during DOT inspections and to mess up your DAC (load damage). Unless you have very "compelling" reasons to go flat bed, stay hell away, you'll make the same (most likely better) wages for doing far less of work driving tankers, vans or even reefers.

They do hire recent driving school graduates.

My first question to u is how long have u been driving. Second is how long u work for Boyd. N the third is y is it a crime to actually do a little work for ur money?? I read ur post here n it makes me laugh. Two weeks ago the longest load I had was just over 500 miles for the weekend. The rest were round 300-350 miles m I still brought home better than 650. Y complain, I made decent money, short loads, home Friday afternoon n didn't leave til early Monday.

And as far as the csa2010, flatbeddin isn't a ticking time bomb. Do it pretrip n u won't have a problem with any DOT man. Bad straps, well that's on u as a driver. Not the company. I say again, sorry u couldn't hack it as a flatbed driver. This job is a way of life my friend. U either enjoy it or u don't.
