Dude, another 10 seconds and he would have been past where he wanted to turn.
Face it, you were in the wrong and would have been at fault had there been an accident.
I've been in that situation many times playing the guessing game of are they really going to turn. It's no fun.
Personally I always wait til they actually turn because I've seen too many cars go past that I though were going to turn before where I was waiting. It's all part of defensive driving and protecting your driving record, which for most on here is the key to their livelihood.
You got lucky, learn something from it.

You could have waited 10 seconds to go. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Make all of the excuses you want.

Do you not know what the law is?

If you can't take the blame on this one after asking who was to blame. then a real accident is most likely in your near future. Face it. You need to make sure the intersection is clear before proceeding. I am not saying that this mistake hasn't happen to some of the rest of us. But...... We also know that we were at fault.

It also only gets worse in a big truck. Your turn radius and distance needed in order to merge into traffic is greatly increased. Learn from this mistake, be thankful no one was hurt, and be ready to have an open mind while you learn to drive a big truck.
