hello my name is hillbilly. i am currently an owner opperator leased on with a small company, but my wife and i have started the process of getting our own authority. i've been driving for almost 9 years and have been an owner operator for almost 2 years. is their any advice to be given to us, as we begin our journey down this long fullfilling road. my wife has been doing research online for several weeks now and we have begun filling out the longggg list of paperwork. i would just like to get some advice on things that i might forget to do or things that i might just not know about. also if their is a good step by step book to walk us through the whole process that would be awesome. we appreciate any help and feedback that we can get. god bless you all and safe motoring.
getting my own authority

Welcome and look on the oo section or exp drivers section.

Here's two threads that may help you. No books out there that I'm aware of!
This thread may be a bit difficult to wade through, but has some good basic info.
This thread has it a bit more cut and dried, but doesn't allow additional comments.
Both of these threads may help you out with things. Good luck, and feel free to ask questions! -

Download the OP-1 form. It has step by step instructions. It's actually very well written and straight forward.
Apply online with a credit card. Saves up to 2 weeks of processing time. Dont mail anything unless there is no other option.
They will post your request for a 10day dispute time then begin to work on your MC. Usually takes 21 days.

I just filed for my MC on 11/25. Received it 12/17.
Oh, and I didnt use any "Authority" or "Permit" company. This stuff isn't rocket science and it is a waste of money to PAY someone (or a company) to do what you can do yourself all online.
I had to have my insurance company electronically file my BMC-34 and BMC-91 and then used OOIDA for my BOC-3 (free if your a member).
Don't forget you need a drug and alcohol consortium membership. OOIDA also offers that via CMCI for around $100/yr.
..it's been interesting learning all of this and as long as you got the time, do it yourself and enjoy learning the ins and outs.
By the way..100% of everything must match. For example, your LLC/USDOT/Insurance and so on. If anything isn't a match, it becomes invalid.
I filed my LLC then USDOT then OP-1 (MC)...same exact name on each form.

PS. Consider using a disposable cell phone number for your OP-1 or be prepared for constant calls from just about anyone trying to sell you anything.
I got my 1st call 3 mins after filing online. DOTAUTHORITY has a live feed from FMCSA...Amazing..Last edited: Dec 18, 2010
KSGunny Thanks this. -
JD's right...your phone will ring off the hook for a few days and then settle down a bit.
I did all the paperwork and everything myself. One, I'm too cheap to pay somebody something I should be able to do myself and two, I wanted to know just what all was involved. It's all done online, just have your VISA card out and warmed up. IRP, IFTA, UCR, BOC-3, Insurance.... Get working on your insurance at the beginning of the process too. Sometimes that can take time getting quotes and signed up...KSGunny Thanks this.
