I have a question regarding the engine wiring harness on my MXS motor. I had issues with my jakes not working right and found some hoses had rubbed through the wiring harness in two spots. On the driver's side there are two plugs that connect to the top of the head just under the valve covers. Both of these were damaged, the one on the front was worse.

What do these wires run? Is it just the jakes or do they run the accuators as well?

If i remember right the front harness controls the injectors and jakes and the rear controls the vva's

Both harnesses that go into the top of the motor control the injectors, IVAs, and jakes. The front harness is for the front 3 cylinders and the back 3 control the back 3 cylinders. You may also notice a little (or a lot) of oil in these plugs and this is a common problem with CATs. Just fix the wires (with proper butt connectors and heat shrink) and then clean out the plug with elctrical cleaner and away you go.

Ok that's what I was afraid of. I reconnected the one wire that broke through, but there are several that have worn through to the copper wire. They are all worn through so close to the plug it's hard to get a good crimp on them. Also there was oil seeping through some of the wires as you mentioned.

I'm trying to decide if I can band-aid it for a little bit. I was at a Cat shop and they wanted $900 for the harness and 4+ hours of labor to install it. The harness doesn't have any sections so you have to buy the whole thing.

I'm so mad at myself that I didn't catch this. I look right at it everyday, just didn't look behind the hoses to see it was rubbing.

the 2 harnesses shouldn't cost more than $500, 2 years ago both harnesses were less than $425, I would do some price checking elsewhere. and yes the labor should be 4-5hrs. you should be able 2 get parts and labor for around $900.

I was told I couldn't buy just those two harnesses. They said the entire engine harness is one piece and has to be replaced as a single unit. I think the exact price was $865 or so plus 4 hours. The total was around $1200.
