I understand your opinion, but leasing does work for some drivers and it is up to each individual driver to research which option works best for them. I am not an advocate for leasing and agree that buying your own truck is the better option in most cases. Sadly, this simply is not an option for a great number of drivers. I am glad it is working out for you.

Hmm, I've been with Stevens for 9 mos (driving for more than 9 yrs) and I have yet to get in a truck (except the training trucks on the yard) that had the Jake disconnected... All of the trainers trucks had a working Jake (though you don't get to use it till late in your time with a trainer) and both trucks I've been in since going solo has had a working Jake (though the cruise was turned off till recently)...
So where are all these trucks without working Jakes at???? I sure as h*ll haven't seen them...

Stevens used to disconnect the jake for a short time for new drivers. But it was/is not a safety issue. They teach EVERY driver to properly go down a mountain without a Jake. Safety is very important, and knowing how to decend a mountain without a Jake should be a requicet before any driver is set out in a Tractor Trailer.

    amen Aracos, and corporal clegg....

I have been with stevens 2 3/4 years, and the jakes have been on on every truck I have been in. Yes students must learn how to descend a mountain grade without a jake, a much needed skill...what if the jake malfunctions, or you are on less than optimal conditions, rain, sleet, snow...

Just another stevens basher, who does not know the truth.

That is your opinion, and your choice, but some of us do Not Want weekends off. Not everyone is the same, or want the same things out of life. Leasing is NOT the best route to owning a truck, but done right, it does work.

Do your own research, know what you want from your life on the road, and what your goals are for the next year, 5 years, 10 years.

You know, there was a time when Jakes didn't exist. I know. I drove then. I believe, that for the safest driver, they need to learn to traverse grades WITHOUT a jake. Then if it breaks, you don't have a driver out there that is a danger to himself and everyone else on the road.
Safety is precisely why Stevens makes new drivers learn to drive without a jake first.

My husband has driven for a couple different companies so far, and I really am of the opinion that they are all pretty comparable, give or take a few differences. People complain all the time about how bad such and such company is, but trucking has it's own set of realities that alot of new drivers have a hard time adjusting to. No matter what a company tells you about hometime, etc......you had better count on not being home most of the time because if the wheels aren't turning you and they are not making any money. I know when my husband started he had a very hard time adjusting to not coming home and I hated him being gone!! But, all in all it can be a very fun and rewarding career if you go into it with your eyes wide open. We know because we had to learn some lessons the hard way in the business. It is not for everyone and for those considering trucking as a career do some research. Most companies are going to start you out pretty much the same way, I do not think there are too many variances with that. I myself will be a driver soon and joining the ranks of trucking andd I am very much looking forward to it as I will be teaming with my husband. A bad economy as kept me from being able to obtain work as a nurse (as I am fairly new), with that being said they say that necessity was the mother of invention-you do what you have to do to survive!! So who knows, maybe I will like this better than nursing!! Happy Trucking!!:yes2557:
