Feds Planning Crackdown On Tired Truckers

WASHINGTON -- A federal safety agency has proposed a crackdown on truckers who stay too long behind the wheel, but some senators said Tuesday the government should get even tougher.

Companies that violate regulations designed to keep drivers rested could be required to install devices in all trucks to monitor driving habits including hours spent on the road.

But that doesn't go far enough, Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., said during a Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation subcommittee hearing.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration proposed a regulation in January requiring trucking firms that violate hours of service regulations at least 10 percent of the time in a two-year period to install electronic on-board recorders.

Wonder if the mexican trucks will have to have those recorders on board?

It's a shame they don't redirect these efforts of "cracking down" on truckers toward providing more and safer places for these "tire truckers" to rest.
