this is confusing to understand but i'm gonna take a stab at it. if your at a shipper/reciever for 2 or more then go to sleeper if less than 2 hrs go to off duty (line 1). and on your driving, you can still only drive 11 hrs a day legally and work 14. the new law does actuallystae that all time spent in the drivers seat is logged as drive time. all you have to do to beat that i get out of the drivers seat. sit on the bunk or in the passenger seat. your trainer might need some training himself if he doesn't know the basics of the logs. i hoped this helped but like i said it is confusing to read.

Cerberus: You must be one of the drivers that feel you are not allowed to hang out in the sleeper unless it's for 2 hours or more. This is not true. Many drivers feel this way but you can be in the sleeper for as little or long as you want. Logging off duty at a customer is usually a red flag to DOT. To be off duty you have to be free to do what you want. The customer & dispatch would have to agree on you running down the road.
Logging the time in the sleeper (and actually being there) might help you out later down the road.
You can driver more than 11 hours in a day. You just have to make sure you take a 10 hour break after 11 hours of driving. Example: I start @ 12:00 am and drive 11 hours, take a 10 hour break & I can drive another 3 hours in that day. I did not violate my hours of service. I didn't however do a pre-trip or post-trip etc. Many drivers feel your total hours on lines 3 can't total more than 11 hours, VERY UN TRUE!
The way DOT is putting it in the book is letting you know that anything less than 2 hours will not go towards a split break. This leaving drivers very confused and feeling they can not nap for 30 minutes if they want. Now if you do, understand all this time is counting against your 14 hours. -
You started to work @ 6:45 am your 14 hour is up @ 8:45 pm. The driving time (line 3) can not total more than 11 hours. You can not drive past the 14th hour (8:45 pm). Now did you log anything on line 4 past 8:45 pm. This might be something he is not aware of , you can be on line 4 past your 14 th hour.
Also some drivers feel line 4 time comes out of your 11 hours of driving time available. THIS IS VERY UN TRUE! Maybe he doesn't understand how logs works because you explained a very legal day. If you had a 10 hour break prior to 6:45 am.
Now a few questions for you:
1). Was you really in the sleeper? If not you should not be logging sleeper (go in the sleeper)
2). Did they require you to stand there and count, watch etc? (if so this time is on line 4, yes the bills give you away on this). -
what i say and what i do out there are two totally different things. like i know too much time or not enough time on a line will make the computer spit out the logs and call violations. and if i stop driving by midnight and don't drive again til one the computer will not catch this not matter how much i am over on my hours. remember i have been doing this 15 yrs and stay away from any log violations. my logbook is as clean as a whistle and dot has seen it a few times and don't say a word about it or jb either who is probably one of the toughest out there on the log book. i understand the 11, 14, 70 very well and use it to my advantage. the 8/2 split is the only thing that messes me up and i try to stay away from it. i do it that way to make it look good and like i am not stuck on a line too long. i even flag a 5 minute potty break just to get there minds off the log and make them think it is right and i only carry the previous 7 days and the day i am working on. by law that is all that is what i am supposed to carry and show a dot officer. -
thanks everyone i know it might have been hard to understand what i was saying but your answers were what i was looking for thank u
