I'm curently working for a company that hauls containers and I was wondering about the same info as you. But there is one thing you fail to leave out and that is using the port equiptment. (chassis) You would have to use there chassis to deliver the container. And if the container stays out for a long period of time therse's a charge for it. who pays for that?

In Houston the freight is controlled by brokers whom pay 63 to 70%. I'm sure you can contract direct however you would need deep pockets. Brokers typically wait 30 plus days for their money. You could factor but that teaks the customer off cause the factoring co. re-invoices the shipper under their billing. Makes you look weak plus it's expensive.

You also would need interchange agreements with the lines. These require insurance and surety bonds in place.

Another point is the chassis, the lines no longer want the maint. of chassis. The U.S. is about the only place they still provide them. Currently the GCCP ( controls chassis on the gulf coast ) is pushing back hard at truckers for all port repair charges. One blowout can easily moot the payment for one load. Some carriers are requiring the L/O's to "accept" the chassis and by doing so agree to all repairs needed upon return and this includes lights, tire flat spots, mud flaps etc.

Be better if you go with a broker serving the area. One example would be MDI at JAX. Look on Craigslist for your area, they are there.
