I worked at a Freightliner dealership, as a mechanic. You want the history of the vehicle, most select trucks are reconditioned quite extensively.
The best advise you can get is to read the warranty and understand everything it covers, your responsibilities to keep the coverage active, and most importantly have a note book strictly for problems you encounter every little thing. Even if it only happens once, have the dates marked down as to when the different sections of the warranty elapse and before that date take it to a dealer and have everything checked and repaired.
It is also possible to get a free inspection, before the warranty elapses talk to a sales man about getting a newer truck, they will do a used truck inspection, checking every component. Wash the truck before you bring it in for any inspection, what they can not see, they will not make note of.
    Just a thought!
Before the warranty expires have a valve set and printout done even a dyno run, also have a plug swap done checking for damage to the diffs and transmission. Have every component that is covered under warranty checked and certified as good. It may cost you a few dollars but, having a warranty and bringing it in a week late is a common thing, I have been told hundreds of times how he or she knew of the problem but had to take that load.

QUESTION : Would this approach work as well on the "60 Day Buyers Assurance Policy" ?

Why not! even if you have to pay to have everything inspected and tested that has coverage, then at least you know and knowledge is king.
